Nap 250 back from service query (not sure I'm happy with the dealer)

Posted by: Jamesie on 29 October 2016

hi all , I have just picked up my Nap 250 back from service from Salisbury , upon getting home and looking at the job sheet it appears that ,

A , I have had my full service.

B , parts used show a box and labels with all internal packaging.

i did NOT have the unit returned with any packaging at all , even though it appears this is paid for in with the cost of my service , I phoned the dealer and they said, as I didn't take it in to them in a box and they put it in a box to send it away ,it was returned by naim in a new box buy THEY (the dealership) have kept my box , this is an authorised dealer that I was told to take it to by Naim, there was no mention that I had to package it at all as this is an authorised dealer, I was of the understanding that this is all part of the dealerships service that they provide in return for the priveledge of being chosen as an authorised dealership .

the parts listed that I have not been given are as follows,,,,,,,,, 2 x end cap foam reference ,,,,,1 x inner wrap large carton reference ,,,,,1 x large carton printed reference ,,,,,,1 x label blank 73 x 174 white ,   1 x silica gel sachet.

does this seem right to any of you , surely as it is all listed on my job sheet and I have paid for it all shouldn't I have been given my amp back with these items? ,,,,what right has the dealer got to take any of this away from me , in fact what right does the dealer have to open the box that is being returned to me by Naim , they are just a middle man as a point of contact for collection and returns. Should I give Salisbury a call and express my concerns?

Question, is it possible to have a box upgrade? And if so would everything sound better straight out of the box!

Wesger, I use a standard box but would strongly recommend 3M 8954 Cross
Weave Filament Tape it just holds everything together far better worth a
try ??

They've already done that:  They put one box inside another box - Discrete Reinforcement!

I guess that just leaves box lite?

Back to serious comment...

Perhaps a way to view it is to look at the dealer's perspective
Your 250 arrives without a box
A box is needed to send it back to Salisbury
The dealer provides a box (did they charge you for this?), perhaps a box for one of their demo units that later they'll have to sell with a box.
Your 250 and the dealer's box go back to Salisbury
The 250 is serviced and a new box is provided for the return journey
The dealer unpacks your 250

They have a choice: provide you with the box and loose out when they sell their demo unit, or give you the unit without a box (as you provided it).
If they charged you for a new box, then they should provide it; otherwise it's fair for them to keep the replacement for the box they provided FOC.

You don't want to make it heavy, that just adds to materials and transport costs!

Maybe someone should just have their ears boxed, not quite sure who

The box and packaging are not free. If you took it to the dealer without a box, you should get a new box only  if you have agreed to pay for it, which is very likely about £70. The dealer is behaving perfectly reasonably in my view. If you have an issue it is probably best to speak with the dealer rather than badmouthing them on here.

£70? For a cardboard box?? Really??

My Nait 2 went in to Tom Tom for a service at HQ with no box but came back in a very nice Naim one

What was the cost of the service?

I'm not 100% sure, I had a 42.5 serviced at the same time and I would not like to guess. The 42.5 came back in its own original box.

The box for the Nait might have been added by Tom Tom to send it to Naim initially but it certainly travelled back in it. Either way I was happy.

Thanks Jamesie for kicking off a refreshingly entertaining thread. We're all right really. Hang in there. I think you just caught some people on a bad hair day.

I imagine that it will all be sorted by 26th December if not before.

Good luck and enjoy the choons.

John.

I'd have thought that at the premium pricing of servicing at "HQ" that it wouldn't be unreasonable for Naim to return units in new packaging/boxes gratis.

Why not? One of the Naim staff could also cook you a four course dinner as well.

Naim did: It's a question of what the dealer did, and did the dealer have to provide one of their own Naim boxes for the outward journey to Salisbury.

And with nice music in the background,  possibly an after dinner massage, wouldn't go a miss....

Couple of silly comments there....

doesnt matter if it's Naim or the dealer who supplies the box really does it. At circa £350 for a service, a cardboard box with a cost of, at most,  a fiver surely isn't too much to ask is it?

As it happens, one cooked me a two course dinner about 25 years ago, does that count?   (I knew her outside of work!)

On a serious note, I don't disagree, the cost of a box is somewhat excessive...

Not on the kitchen table, no (and it would have been embarrassing, all her family were there for dinner as well!  )
