I've messed up metatags in dBpoweramp. Do I have to re-rip?

Posted by: Frank E on 23 July 2011

I just noticed on Real Player and iTunes on my desktop that the albums I've ripped to WAV  aren't listed if I sort by album. I thought maybe iTunes or Real couldn;t read the metatags on WAV files but I looked in dBpowerAmp and it seems I didn't deselect the disable tag writing option.

Tonight I ripped a couple of CDs I got this week with tag writing enabled and I note neither i-Tunes nor Real player listi the artist and album in the library, even after re-building.

Do they discard all tag fields if there are any incompatible fields?

I want full tags on all tracks in my library (I'm a bit OCD with things like that)

Do I need to re-rip everything?

Are there any PC Apps I can use to go through a library and add  full tags?

Frank, not familiar with Realplayer, but iTunes does not read the ID3 tag chunks in the WAV file.
There are various apps for editing tags, but assuming you have grouped your rips in folders or directories, you should see as you installed dBpoweramp, when you right click a file in explorer, a tab for ID3 tags, and you can edit and even add album art. You can edit multiple files at a time as well.
This the method I use for tweaking the tags of files in my library.
It is best to rip with dBpoweramp or equivalent, as that will create the id3 chunks for you which is easier to edit if you need to.

Mediamonkey also does a decent job of editing tags in WAV files - it 'remembers' previously used tags in drop down lists, so saves typing and helps with consistency, it is good with re-tagging multiple files (eg changing Album artist for a set of tracks), and does a decent job of finding artwork. It's free, so you can play yourself.

Thanks,

I have all the albums ripped to sensible directories evrything is is one 'unknown album'. I'm thinking ahead to when I get an iPad nStream integrated. How does one browse the music with the iPad..

Oh I've just realised the Naim nStream application on iPad or iPhone will read tags and sort the library.

I've started re-ripping, I think it would be much quicker and more accurate way of populating the tag fields than my typing. About 10% of the way through.

All the tracks are still bundled into one 'unknown album' in all the players for XP that I've tried iTunes, WMP, Real, Winamp.

I've prefixed all the track names with the track number eg 01 Yellow Magic Orchestra -Limbo so that they are in order in Windows Explorer.

My trial of dB powerAmp runs out today. I don't think I'll purchase a copy just yet.

Frank,

Why not just run a conversion to ALAC....tags should come through.
