Roon on Naim media players

Posted by: KennT on 03 November 2016

I've read a lot of favourable comment on Roon and was wondering if their is any word on a software update for the Naim media players.

I know so little about Roon I'm not even sure it could be used in the Naim ecosystem?

Cheers from sunny Australia

I need to leap to the defence of the Ford Fiesta here ...

It is cheaper than the Ferrari. Uses less fuel and emits less CO2. It has longer intervals between services, and costs less to insure. You can fit more people in it, and have a labrador in the boot. The Fiesta does not use unreliable Fiat switchgear.

So I submit that "going a bit faster" is the one of the few benefits of the Ferrari.

and a little bit better looks

@Sloop John B - or anyone with experience in this

Does the product that runs the Sonore UPnP bridge (I'm looking at the SonicOrbiter SE) have to be physically connected to the endpoint via USB or optical (e.g. NDS) or is it sufficient for it to be connected to the network router that the endpoint is connected to ?

I'd like to try Roon and it's a more attractive proposition to me if any additional components such as the SonicOrbiter SE can be kept in the comms cupboard next to the router rather than next to the hifi setup.

Thanks in advance !

It just needs to be on the network. Don't forget you still need to have a Roon Core as well on the same network.

I have tested the bridge with muso and uq2 successfully. I have a sonicTransporter running Roon core and it can also run the bridge.

Indeed it just need to be on the network but there seems to be some issues with the last track on an album finishing 10-15 seconds early so it might be best to wait until this is sorted out. the Sonore section in Computer audiophile and on the Roon forum have information and updates on this.

Thx SJB for the earlier reply.

Does anyone know if the Roon Ready endpoint is coming to the existing streamer range in a software update?

I've just been informed by Jesus at Sonore that the track stopping before the end of the track is unique to Naim, I sincerely hope theres a bug fix, the sound through the microRendu and into the NSD via UPnP is just beautiful, besides life without Roon would be a mistake.

I've just had a play and listen to Roon free trial. Have to say it is head and shoulders above anything else I have tried. The user experience is superb and it just works faultlessly. The sound quality is at least as good, if not better than Audirvana. Using Roon I can force exclusive mode 16 bit perfect lossless output when playing 44/16 ALAC files to my Hugo TT. iTunes and Audirvana convert to 32 bit. It also can stream internet radio (6 Music hi def here I come) and has a superb iPhone remote app for control. When browsing music it picks interesting info from the web about the music you are listening to in a magazine like format.

Very impressed, shame it costs so much though!

Life without Roon for me now would indeed be a mistake.

That's a bit like saying apart from going a bit faster what's the difference between a Ferrari and a Fiesta.

Your best bet is to download the free trial and have a look yourself. I had a visit a few weeks back from a friend with a Naim system to show him Roon and he  immediately could see all the differences.

It brings a large collection to life in  fascinating ways.

I guess I have to confess to being that soldier! Roon is so much better than anything else I have used that immediately SJB showed it to me, I bought a minicomputer with 8GB Ram and 128GB SSD to use as a 'Roon Core'. It is fanless, silent and consumes 0.5w. It is blindingly fast to boot up and I have it connected via USB to DacV1 into 552, for non critical listening. It provides a very fast and powerful interface to your library, allowing you to wander crablike through your collection. A particular advantage is instant access to any of my 37,000 tracks, a particular Achilles heel with many other approaches, where indexing is just too slow.

Would be great if it could integrate with NDS.

Hi David,

could you advise which minicomputer you bought to run Roon Core ?

I'm in a similar situation to yours and am looking to the UDOO X86 ADVANCED PLUS/ULTRA.

thx

Decided in the end not to purchase roon, just too expensive. Best player I've tried but after extended listening I don't think the sound quality is any better than Audirvana. I don't really need all the extra magazine style info it brings to the party. Nice software, shame about the price.

If they would offer a monthly sub I would be interested. Its interesting that they don't perhaps they are worried people will only use it for a while?

Sbilotta, I bought a machine called  'Eggsnow ' from Amazon, 8GB memory, 128 Gb SSD. No problems so far.....

Value obviously is a subjective opinion, I jumped straight to lifetime membership for less than the price of one powerline.

I seriously doubt it, although there is nowt as queer as folk but why would anyone stop using it?

I will only stop using it if something better emerges. For the meantime, lightening fast access to individual tracks is invaluable. With 37,000 + tracks the current Naim apps can't hold a candle to it. But my bet was $100 for a year, which in this game keeps all options open!

Listening session at Kendrick's (Naim Forum Member) this week. Sonictransporter i5 server w/ Roon server/ Micro Rendu/Uptone Audio UltraCap PS. I brought my Chord 2Qute. Impressive in every way. SQ excellent, Roon experience unmatched at this point. Hope Naim can integrate classic streamers and enable streaming products to pass DSD 128 and up.

SOtM network player option 2 months Roon trial and 1 year Roon $60.

do you know if SOtM can run UPNP/DLNA and roon in parallel without switching the input via web?

Posted on: 13 December 2016 by sbilotta

Thanks David, similar to the sT i5, but with wireless.

Interesting.

Not sure.

Wow, Roon is expensive! I already have Audirvana and it sounds awesome to me, and costs a fraction as much. None of the magazine stuff is all that interesting to me, so Roon will not be on my Christmas list. Honestly, if it cost a little more than than Audirvana then I might switch, but at that ridiculous price there's no chance.
