HDX strange power down

Posted by: Arcadian on 04 November 2016

I had to power down my HDX last night. After I pressed/held the power switch, I noticed 2 things:

  1. It took a long time, subjectively, to power down;

  2. It got very noisy, with what sounded like the CD mechanism spinning up, but could have been the fan. But both much noisier than in normal operation. This lasted for a long time after the screen had blanked out.

So I switched off at the mains, rested it and powered up again; rested it and then powered down, but timed the process this round. Same symptom; CD mech (or fan) spins up, continues to run. Screen blanks after c. 4 mins, takes another 4 mins for CD mech (or fan) to shut down.

So I left it overnight in standby, repeat this morning and it's fine. Usual couple of minutes to power up, quick and quiet power down.

Has anyone experienced anything similar, or can offer an explanation as to whether this is serious, (eventually necessitating another trip to Naim),  or another computer-related temper tantrum?

The CD mech was replaced at the factory this year after the previous one failed. Seems to rip OK, and, ironically much more quietly than its predecessor.

Any assistance or advice would be welcome.

Hi Arcadian,

I've had a similar experience with my HDX at the time I owned one; upon shutting down it seemed that the fan ramps up until maximum speed. Only switching off the unit via the back panel could stop this. This was not a one-time experience, but it always happened when shutting down ...

Since my HDX was always on, I did not paid any attention to this phenomenon. After all: when I started the unit, everything worked flawlessly again. I think it stayed with me for more than a year that way.

At a later date I've experienced a short circuit somewhere in the house which tripped the circuit breaker. Unfortunately this crashed the HDX also. For me, that was the moment to decide to put all my music on a NAS and traded my HDX and SuperNait 1 for a SuperUniti.

The HDX also went into repair at an earlier stage because of trouble with the CD drawer - it seemed to have a mind of it's own: once the drawer was open, it automatically closed right away ...

Many regards, Michel

Only occasionally have I experienced a slow shut down. I usually just think of it being a computer, which can, as most of us experience, sometimes take ages to shut down.
Only a couple of times in the 3 years (or so since I bought the HDX) have I had any issues, usually sorted by a re-boot.

I had similar weird behaviour shortly before the computer board power supply failed - might be worth getting it checked as the failure took out some other components when it failed.

Thanks for the replies; I was starting to be re-assured until Paul's response! The HDX has been back to the factory this year (for the new mech) so obviously passed whatever exit/soak test they apply at Naim central at that time.

However it is a first gen model so the power supply will be c. 8 years old now......I'll have a chat with my dealer.

Check for a smell of burnt caps - like fried cabbage. If you get such a smell I would get it down to your dealer asap otherwise maybe if no other wird issues  maybe just do nothing? Paul
