Loading Downloads to Unitiserve

Posted by: Mike A on 04 November 2016

A while ago I purchased my first digital download to the Unitiserve. Until that point, I'd only used it for ripping CDs.

I purchased an album from 7digital and the zip file duly arrived on my iMac., unpacking into a folder (the artist name), containing a folder (the album name), containing 6 tracks (.mp3 files). I opened the shared drive that is my Unitiserve (nss******) and dragged the folder across. The album title showed up on my Naim iOS app after choosing the UPNP input and selecting Albums.

This evening I have purchased three further albums, one by blind faith and two by IQ. Each unzipped into a folder containing a folder containing the tracks. As there were two IQ albums, I put them in the Same Folder i.e. folder IQ containing two folders (Dark Matter and The Seventh House) each containing .mp3 files. The Blind Faith folder(Artist) contains one folder (Blind Faith album title) containing FLAC files for the tracks.

I dragged these into the Unitiserve Downloads folder, however although I can see they are in the shared locations ns*****, they are not showing up under the Naim app UPNP setting.

I've also looked at then-Serve app on my iPad - under Devices NSSxxxxxxDownloads I can see my very first download (All Blues) but not those added today.

Suggestions gratefully received!

It may be as simple as the UServe not having re-scanned itself yet.  When I owned one, it sometimes rescanned immediately upon me adding new files to Downloads, and other times I had to force a rescann, sometimes more than once, for all files and art to be indexed and show up.

Thanks Bart. I shut down and restarted the Unitiserve and ... the missing albums have now shown up. Is there a more friendly way to force a re scan?

Next challenge is to add the missing artwork for one album!

i personnaly put usb sticks with hires ( scandisk 256 go) on the back side of the unitserve. These files appear then on the naim app. You can put two usb sticks on the back of the unitserve.

I have tried to import the files from my pc to the unitserve. But i don't know how. No dealer could help me. The only thing i could do is share these files with the nds , but they don't exist inside the unitserve.

I think the usb sticks are easy and quick to manipulate. 16/44 files on the usb sticks sound the same as ripped cds on the unitserve. hires sound better.

What a frustrating evening! Having got the added album to show up in the Naim app, I thought it would be quick and simple to sort out the art work. I've done this many times using the n-Serve app on the iMac or iPad. And ... no Edit button for this album!!

Could it be that albums in the download folder can't be edited? Any suggestions on how to proceed from here?

Yes that's right. For whatever reason Naim don't allow you to use nserve to edit stuff in the downloads folder.  The artwork has to be a jpg called folder.jpg, or cover.jpg also works in my experience, and you put it in the same folder as the music tracks for that album. If you want to edit other metadata then you have to do that with a non-Naim editor.  There are numerous threads about this on the forum, which you can search for easily.

Adding files to a 'downloads folder' is easy and done as described by Mike. UnitiServe manual is quite clear on that (unlike some of the Naim manuals )
I'd recommend that an album artwork is added prior to uploading a new album. Just find the artwork on internet, copy it to a computer, rename the file to folder.jpg, place it in the same folder with tracks and proceed with the album upload.
Note: artwork file must be a true JPG, not a converted one.

Question to Mike - why MP3??? Wouldn't it be better to download hi-resolution audio? HD Tracks is one of the possible sources of high-resolution files. Your UnitiServe can handle files up to 192 kHz / 24 bit.

Many thanks for these. I'll look for a suitable jpg this morning.

The reason for the MP3 - that was the only format available on the 7digital site.

Nearly there! Adding the folder.jpg file has fixed it partly. Cover art shows in the Nain app on my iPhone when showing Albums. Opening the album shows the cover above this list of tracks. Not quite there with the iPad though! While the Albums view of my music shows the cover, once I select the album and play a track, the generic circle with Naim on one side appears above the progress bar at the bottom of the screen. Odd how each app behaves differently.

Anyone else experienced this and found a fix?

Open the NAIM app > top right corner > little ratchet circle > click it.

Find a line: Clear Image Cache > click in it.

Close the app and re-open it.

Is your UnitiServe the hard drive model or the solid state drive model?  If hard drive...which operating system is it running?  We first need to determine if your uServe supports the Downloads storage feature.

Thanks Adam - I really appreciated your advice.

Tried these steps, closed the app by swiping up and restarted the iPad. In Albums view I see the album with the cover art, but tapping it takes me to a page with the generic Naim cd/disc symbol on the left and the track list on the right. Navigating by artist first, tapping on Blind Faith opens a window with just the cover art. Tapping that takes me to the same view as above.

I've also checked in n-Serve, where the art work in the albums list is the generic one, but tapping on that brings up the correct cover above the track listing. 0verall, very inconsistent and confusing !

As Adam says, clear the cache on the device (iPad) which isn't showing the artwork correctly. Not n-Serve or anywhere else.

Clear the image cache on the iPad.

Sorry, should have been clear that clearing the image cage was the first thing I did before the steps I describe above. Didn't fix the problem.

I've never found clearing the image cache to have any effect in this situation, but I have occasionally found that clearing the UPnP cache has worked. Go to Settings > Input Settings > UPnP to find it.

Hi Chris - tried this but no success. Music sounds just as good with or without the right picture, so I enjoy the album and control my OCD! Odd that it's the only FLAC I've downloaded rather than ripped, and the only album with this problem.
