NAC202 added to the system but can't get any sound from the turntable

Posted by: Mark Carwardine on 05 November 2016

I have introduces a NAC202 pre-amp into my system (Unit2/NAP200/LINN LP-12/Stageline) but can't get any sound from the turntable. CD, Radio etc from the Uniti2 sounds great but nothing from the stage line  which is connected to the powered aux socket on the nac202 (only one it fitted).

Any ideas?

It worked perfect with just the uniti2/NAP202/Stageline.

Thanks,

For playback from the Uniti are you using the volume control on the NAC202 or on the Uniti?  Please also say what output connectors you have connected to which input connectors.

This will help establish how you've wired and configured the system: Without this information we can only make guesses.

And please make sure you've connected your turntable

On a serious note, which is actually a bit in line with the above. Is your 202 new or pre-loved?

It is possible that the Aux input has been assigned to RCA rather than Din socket.

You do need to read the User's Manual. Page E9 of the online version.

Which I just did - briefly and - it's difficult to find this. Unless you know you're looking for it.

You may find this difficult to follow.

10.2 NAC 282 and NAC 202 Input Socket Assignment The input selection buttons select the source input signal to be routed to the power amplifier and the loudspeakers.
The NAC 282 and NAC 202 have six DIN input sockets and two alternative pairs of RCA Phono sockets. The RCA Phono sockets can be assigned individually to the cd and aux 2 input buttons in place of the DIN sockets.

Input assignment setup is accessed through preamplifier program mode. To switch into (or exit from) program mode press and hold the prog key on the remote handset (with the handset in preamplifier mode). Program mode is indicated by a flashing indicator on the front panel volume control and, on the NAC 282, the record selection button indicators extinguishing.

Note: If no function is operated within five minutes of entering program mode the preamplifier will return to normal mode automatically.

Once in program mode press and hold the remote handset 1 key to select or de-select the RCA Phono socket input for cd, and the remote handset 6 key to select or de-select the RCA Phono socket input for aux 2. The corresponding front panel input buttons can similarly be used to select or de-select the RCA Phono socket inputs. The appropriate input button indicator will flash three times on selection of the RCA Phono option and once on selection of the DIN option.

To exit from program mode press and hold the prog key on the handset until the record select indicators are restored and the volume indicator stops flashing.

I remember clearly, I was in this world since a few minutes, the nurse was still holding me and my mom was waiting with arms open and a very tired look – it was 6.30 in the morning of a warm June day. I felt horrible, stinking and out of place: no liquid around me, a terrible thin stuff all around, full of smells. I asked, in a very loud voice – where do I go from here? And someone replied – Just read the manual!

Good memory Max. Even trained yogini usually can go back no further than when they were 6 months old

that's what's it's for the manual! most topics on this forum regarding "problems with Naim" which are not if you have read the manual.

Correction: yogini is female, yogi is male.

It must be hell... I have set both memory and project span to 12 hours.

Hi, thanks for all the advice. To answer the questions.

it is a pre-owned NAC202.

I have connected the line out RCA from the Uniti2 to the Aux2 In RCA. With Chord red & black leads (which is the source?).

The Stagline is connected to the Aux2 in + power socket.

Still no joy.

I re-connected the Stageline back into the Unti2 and we have sound.

Am I getting the benefit of the NAC202 on my Vinyl with this set-up, it sounds great.

Thanks,

Mark

I am out at the moment, but from memory I do not think you can connect to both Aux 2 inputs simultaneously. Only one can be used.

Yes, you can only use one at a time. Connect the stageline to the powered socket and the Uniti to aux 1 or cd or tuner. The 202 may need programming to enable the powered aux 2. It's all in the manual......

So, essentially, you haven't followed the advice above.

IF you haven't missed out some extra stage - the fact that the Uniti2 will play through the RCA phono  AUX2 sockets means the DIN AUX2 is NOT enabled - which is why what you have done --- doesn't work.

Try this  - Cycle until done.

Thanks Adam, I thought I did follow the instructions to the letter but obviously not. Above a comment says that I can't use the AUX ports simultaneously. If this is the case can I get a different lead for the Stageline?

Thanks,

Hi Mark,

You should keep the Stageline plugged into the powered Aux 2 input. The uniti can be plugged into the CD RCA inputs adjacent to the Aux 2 RCA inputs. You will then need to program the CD RCA as the input assignment for the front CD input button as set out in Para 10.2 on page E9 of   the manual. Also make sure that the Aux 2 RCA input is correctly assigned to the Aux 2 input button.

It was all going so well.

If you are running the Stageline off the AUX2 powered socket you need to connect it with a SNAIC-5 ( https://forums.naimaudio.com/topic/snaic---this-is ) AND configure AUX2 for DIN.

All working now thanks for the help, but for some reason the NAIM light on my NAP200 has now stopped working.....
