Dead tweeter on Naim Allae
Posted by: GreenAlex on 05 November 2016
Hi everyone,
finally a saturday off, girlfriend away for the day... so what do I do? I turn on some music!
But Sound was off. Way off. The right tweeter on my Allaes seems to have died -.-
Has anyone ever had this happen? I tried hooking up the crossover to the other speaker and the crossover seems to be working ok. I also checked if one of the cables was broken, but the signal seems to be going through.
Does anyone have any experience here? Are these still available or is this an unmodified tweeter?
Seems your question would be best sent here: support@naimaudio.com
you need a new scanspeak tweeter!
You need a new PAIR of tweeters.
I had the same experience recently with SBLs. As advised above you need first to contact Naim or your Naim dealer. Be cautious though. I phoned Naim support first and was told there were no SBL tweeters left in stock. I then rang my dealer to ask if they could recommend an alternative. They were very surprised to hear that there were no tweeters available from Naim and made their own enquiries, which elicited a pair of tweeters. I took in the tweeter cabinets and they fitted them for me for free.

Interesting, CDB.
I was just informed that there are no more tweeters available for the Allae but only for the SBL. Apparently they would match though. But the price is pretty steep.
Does anyone have any experience with replacing just one tweeter? I know some people say that they might sound quite different, but is this really the case?
You'd probably do better getting a matched pair of standard ScanSpeak D2008s (I believe the 851100 version is appropriate).

It will be fine. Yes it's best to replace them as a pair but I doubt very much you will hear a difference if any if you don't.
However, I would make sure that the tweeter be one that is specifically selected for the Allae and not an off the shelf equivalent.
I have now ordered a single ScanSpeak D2008/851100. It is the exact model that is in my Allae. I will weigh the broken tweeter and the new one and add the damper to the new one and then solder it back in.
If it sounds way off, then maybe I will have to get one hand-picked by Naim. If it sounds good, I will keep it and see if I need to replace the other one as well. It may Sound better than the original one given its age :-)
As you've ordered just one tweeter, in case you find you need a second, have you managed to ensure that you'll be able to get a second one from the same manufacturing batch?
I blew a tweeter in my SL2s about three years ago. My dealer (Accent on Music) had a spare and, while waiting for the two replacements he ordered for me to arrive from the UK, he fitted the spare one. The resulting sound wasn't a patch on what it had been before, solidly reaffirming the value of the work Naim does in matching the tweeters into pairs when the speakers were built new. When the two new ones were fitted, the difference was night and day. My advice is to get two matching units.
Hi,
it's interesting how different experiences can be. I wonder why this is? I got my replacement speaker which is 3 grams heavier than the Naim one. I glued the damper on the rear, soldered it into place and fitted it. And I have to say I cannot hear a clear difference between the two speakers.
This could of course be due to the fact that left and right speaker essentially never play the exact same music. Or at least not that often. But I cannot hear a clear difference. I guess that maybe in a perfect room with high end recordings (better than most modern rock and hard rock) you might be able to hear more of a difference than I do. In that case replacing them with a matching pair (be it Naim or not) would make sense.
For now I am surprised myself that it seems unnecessary to replace both. Price is a quarter of the price of one selected by Naim (excluding fitting). So for a speaker this old and not being manufactured anymore, I can recommend giving it a try :-)
