Speakers for 272/300DR
Posted by: Emre on 08 November 2016
Dear All;
I want to change my Speakers as the final faze of my setup.
No i can not do home demo, maybe i can hear Focal Sopra 2 with a Naim setup but not 272/300DR.
My room will be 40Square meter roof top with a 1,7 inclination.
My current speakers are Sonus Faber Cremona M which i like very much with classical, jazz, acqustic music but lacks behind with rock and electronic.
I want a all rounder with a little bass present.
Due to my special relationship with my dealer i am restricted to brands he sells
Focal, Spendor, Elac, Harbeth, Usher, KEF, ATC
The Usual suspects are :
Focal Sopra 2 - this is my limit for the price.
SCM40 - better price option
Spendor A9 - better price option
Spendor SP100R2
Herbeth 30.1 or 40.1 - no idea / do they need separate stands?
or any Elac , Usher line with a max price of Sopra 2.
Any happy ears with these speakers? and yes i know it depends on the room and i should demo them etc.... believe me i will i f i can but it is fair long shot.
@Hungryhalibut True you did say, "they are nice but dull ...". I was interested in the dull point not because I know any different but because at first pass, it seemed a nice speaker
Nothing special helps explain.
Just out of curiosity:
- does the wide dispersion of the Ovators have to do with Naims focus on PRAT?
- does wide dispersion also imply that the Ovators have more problems in reaching further in a lengthy room?
Questions based on my own observation: have set of CM1's which reach far in my room, no problem. Also have a pair of floorstanders having also side speakers and these seem to keep the music more around them and have difficulties reaching into my 10m long living room.
and what if i don't mind the look of SOPRA 2...
is a bonus.

In my humble opinion, I loved the sound and just as importantly for me the look of the Sopra'2.
And on the end of the 300dr they are a dream, in all areas they perform beautifuly, a rich warm bass, subtle detail, exceptional soundstage , I liked them so much I bought them.
But of course, as with everything it's budget dependant, personal taste, ect ect ect ...but if you did decide to go for them, I can guarantee you will not be disappointed
Just out of interest, how can you possibly 'guarantee' that?

Simple...HH, it's a turn of phrase that means, something is that good your happy to endorse them, very much like the many times you have endorsed your own 272/250 and dare I mention the (SBL's)... to quote from the fish himself ' there... really rather good'...
Ps, on a more serious note, I hope your ears are coming back to life..?

My 600s are in a room 32 by 20 feet and fire down the long axis. Wide dispesion works for me since I can't always be bothered to sit in the so-called sweet spot. Infact, I went for the 600s knowing that its BMRs had wide-dipersion characteristics. I don't have a dedicated listening room with one chair bolted to the floor and optimised for the sweet-spot - I'm required to share the space with the rest of the family and with a number of folk listeing off-axis the 600s offer the best of many worlds - well for me at least![]()
I may have said 'they're rather good' but I'd certainly never guarantee that someone might like them. I'd not even say I was sure someone may like them, more like 'they would be worth a try', which is entirely different. Electronics are much easier to recommend, as they are not really room dependent, unless for example a particular amplifier had massive bass output.
As for the ears, they are much better, and it's really kind of you to ask. And just as good, I can now ride my bike again, which is just brilliant. As for going back to work, that's another matter altogether.

That's good news, considering the hobby we all love, there can be nothing worse then the inability to hear well.... Glad your back on the bike...one step at a time as they say...

I play bass in a rock band - with the Ovators I have a feeling I'm sitting at a mixing console in a recording studio
Adam, Anymore info on your rock band? ...
Is it Wailbone?
I will not keep anyone accountable if I don't like the speaker so no worries, not after guarantees just your opinions
Adam I want signed Cd! and a backstage pass in a concert!
Sopra 2 is a strong contender and I have to give my wife a written guarantee that this hifi thing is over for a year or two, but I will buy a project classic before my jubilee !
I guarantee, yea that's right, guarantee, that the Spendor D7 is not, and I repeat, not dull in any way shape or form. I guarantee this member never heard these Spendors!
Where does this guy come from? And why do members take this guys descriptions as gospel?
For crying out loud, he owns fourteen year old designed speakers, with fourteen year old technology, and drivers!!!!!!!
News flash, the Naim SL2's are not the pinnacle of speaker development, they sold poorly, and Naim dealers in the States wouldn't even carry them after they brought in a couple of pairs to audition, which I had the privilege to hear, well it really wasn't a privilege.
The truth is they have limited bass, little depth, and limited loudness capability, they start to break up when really pushed, and they are not the most transparent sounding speaker out there, not by a long shot, so there!!!!!!!!!!! ![]()

Who is this mysterious person who owns 14 year old speakers?
LOL and PFFFFFFFTT.
Would like to hear what a 272/300dr would do to my speakers
.
Age is of little relevance with speakers, some 40 years old let alone 14 sound better than many modern ones. Of course the converse is also true.
Emre, it really is a shame you cannot audition as my guess would be that the SCM40 would have the sopra 2 for breakfast, and at less than half the price

This would be the
- lentil curry
From HH's list.

The only problem with the SCM40's is the distinct lack of soundstage, some say the build quality isn't great either, but obviously they are a much cheaper speaker then some of the other contenders that have been mentioned...

That's reassuring. I was worried, having read Badlands' earlier post that if mine were 14 years old I'd need to put them in the bin. But as they are only eight years old I can therefore keep them a further six years before chucking them out. And now I read that they can last 40 years! Wow!! So they have another 32 years to go. As I'm now 55 I won't need to worry until I'm 87. This is great news. The idea that they might already be fit only for landfill was slightly discombobulating as when I was listening to music this morning I thought they were sounding quite good.
My last speakers still sound very good at about 46, with only a crossover tweak at age about 20, and crossover recap and supertweeters replaced because one distorted at high volumes at age 45, and considerable use including a fair bit at high levels over the 25 years or somthat I had them.
I'm a few years older than you, and my 'new' speakers are also about 8, and I hope and expect them to be worth inheriting by my kids when I either lose my hearing or can't remember what a speaker is for, or expire in ecstasy listening to music through them...
i suspect I wouldn't likemthe sound through your speakers, nor you through mine, but that doesnt stop both being good to us - part of life's rich pageant!

They are for sure good value vs sopra 2
I will try to listen them, not with my setup or same setup but try
Scm40 vs sopra 2
I might go and buy one tomorrow![]()

That could not be further from the truth in my experience. Have u heard or inspected SCM40 MK2? The sound staging is superb, even better on the actives. Build quality is exemplary, beautifully finished, and brilliantly engineered. Reassuringly heavy.
Don't believe me? Read the reviews, ask other owners, and check out their pro-audio pedigree.
