Naim Unitiqute 2 VS Uniti Atom?
Posted by: blownaway on 14 November 2016
I was just about to pick up a new Unitiqute 2 when lowen behold the new Uniti line was released. Now I find that I can get a mint UQ2 for HALF the price of the Uniti Atom. I'm debating if its really worth the extra $ for the latest and greatest. You option will help me decide.
This is for music in our kitchen with linn Tukan speakers mounted near our ceiling.
Yes the design of the atom is cool and the led is great but don't really care since this kit goes inside a cabinet hidden from view.
i don't need apple air or goggle cast, only need UPnP funtionality with a ethernet connection.
Yes, I imagine the Atom has an improved dac but the UQ2 has a great dac.
i can buy two UQ2's for the price of an Atom.
Review of UQ2 have been favorable. Do you think the Atom will sound MUCH better or is this a case of only some sonic improvements but mostly design and greater functionality/feature set.
thanks
Of course, the Qute on its own also sounds better than the Qute/100 combo!! So the Atom should definsound better.

That seems very contextual. Some say one thing, some another, suggesting there's another variable. My guess is the speakers have a big effect. It would be interesting to find out whether those using harder to drive speakers such as ATC find the 100 an improvement, while those with easier speakers like Focal 906 don't. Certainly, the mix of opinion suggests your blanket statement is misplaced.
I like some in this thread have heard the Atom, Star and Nova into a pair of quite demanding Focal Sopra No1 speakers... the Atom relatively did fine.. but compared to the other two the music was more shut in, lesser dynamics, had lesser presence and more of a filtered sound. The Nova to me sounded significantly better.. recordings sounded more open, like like, insightful..and ultimately a lot more enjoyable... but this is exactly what you would expect for the money. I think the Atom into a pair of smaller, cheaper speakers would work well in many smaller rooms, albeit perhaps not optimum for immersive listening sessions... you don't get something for nothing.....
To be honest, I am not sure anymore if I simply don't keep my qute2 and get a super dac/steamer with digital in into the qute2?
anyone doing that ? Any recommendations?
Some ultra uhd player also act as good streamers so may hit two birds with one stone .
i like atom but tired of waiting right now plus to be honest, qute2 at the price I paid it is like the bargain of the century.
I agree with you re my sweeping statement. Do yourself a favour and keep your Qute, when all the initial excitement is over re the new Unii series, it will still be a sought after bit of kit. Fools rush out to buy the latest regardless of cost, you Are one step ahead of those and bought something that is almost as good (better if you value radio) for half the money. Surely a no brainier, stop trying to chase the latest thing and just enjoy the noise it makes.
Putting a streamer and DAC into a Qute, which is these things already, would be a bizarre choice. Why not just do nothing and wait until you can hear the Atom, then decide.

I was trying to compensate for the functionality I am missing from the qute2
but ultimately, you are right. Doesn't make sense
There have been some talk in these forums that a new firmware has improved the sound quality of the Atom even more. So don't rush to buy something else until you hear it first, Crabby.
This is from just one reviewer/retailer at the moment, but It has got me exited to finally get my Atom.

Are you sure to return back at your dealer the Superuniti for the Atom?![]()

Well, this is what I'm waiting to find out. the SuperUniti sounds very good and it's really grown on me. I almost prefer the look of it over the new units range too. So I need to audition both with my LS50s, to decide whether the new features and sound quality of the Atom, will be good enough for me. Or do I find some extra cash, and keep the SuperUniti right were it now sits.

Thanks for the heads up. Where did you hear about that firmware update and improvement to atom sound?
what speaker cable you using please with ls50?
very impressed that you comparing an atom to SU.

Hey Crabby,
I see you found the other thread about the Atom firmware update and powerline. All great news if true!
I have a pair of Chord Carnival cables at the moment. But in the process of getting some NACA5 cables to try out.
As for the comparison. It's only because I had sold my Qute/NAP100 and my dealer has lent me the SuperUniti until the Atom arrives. So that's the reason why I'll be auditioning them side by side. I know it's not really a fair comparison, but who knows, maybe the Atom will hold its own quite well.
Good news indeed. I could not resist digging
I just wish he just applied the firmware as the power line addition make it difficult to assess the true performance gain
now, the atom seems promising. The delay is making me consider the star but I am very aware of the serious price differential. The atom will remain a hot favourite until I hear it myself. My place is tiny and qute2 was very ok with ls50. The atom may add that little something to just make it right...
an SU is a serious peace of kit. Only reason Atom interest me is the new open architecture and functionalities. Time will tell but you have a hard call with SU...very hard
The superuniti is able to drive serious speakers like the Dynaudio Contour 20 or the B&W 805 D3. I think the Kef ls50 are undersized to show what it's really capable, it is a very small monitor with clean and detailed sound but with its obvious limits in terms of authority power and punch, I think it is a great match with the Atom

Anto, I am sure the SU can drive much better/bigger speakers (as it should for that price), and it will also be somewhat wasted on the LS50s. At the moment the KEFs are all I really need in my listening space (4mx5m) However, I will need to make a decision once the Atom arrives. Do I match the Atom with the LS50s and leave it at that. As I know that if I spring for the SuperUniti now, I will be tempted to upgrade to some more appropriate speakers later, when my finances (and the missus) allow.
Crabby, I've also been debating the idea of going for the Star instead of the Atom. I'm not convinced that it would be a good investment however, especially when I could get the SU for a much better price, I also don't need a CD player.

IF atom can drive the focal, ls50 should not be a problem
star was just a moment of weakness. Small is beautiful :-)
Any further news on when Atom is likely to hit the shops ? I cancelled my initial order as too long a wait but nevertheless looking forward to hearing one at a dealer's when it finally hits the shops
There hasn't been any news or updates from anyone. But a May release was announced and nothing said after that. So presumably that's still the case. Sooner rather than later would be good.
I think we're all waiting impatiently.
Seen on Facebook naim pics of the new uniti range. Need to work out if available on forum too
still waiting and hoping for May-June
Yes - I saw those also. The Atom (and Core) with those rinky dinky red Neat Iota speakers looked rather tempting!

I love these, makes me nearly wish not having my kef ls50
anyone heard this system as neat are not easy to drive...thats a good indication if atom can handle them
The Atom can drive Focal Sopra 1s to very high volumes, so the Iotas will be no problem.
Whats the feet arrangement below the Iota's ?
The Sopra No1 probably aren't too difficult a load: 2 way with a minimum impedance of 3.9Ω isn't usually an indicator of a particularly load (but without the phase info I can't be entirely sure of this). On the other hand they really will ruthlessly show up any inherent issues in the partnering electronics, they won't give the system anywhere to hide. That combination of characteristics is probably why Naim used them to show just how good the fundamental performance of the new Uniti series actually is.

I can indeed vouch for that, although with the Atom not surprisingly you run out of top end resolution and space in the sound and it can sound a little congested when pushed ... but hey it is only an Atom and I suspect typically won't be driving largish speakers. I suspect the Iotas with their sweet top end will sound superb with the Atom
