Unitiserve suddenly can't find half my music
Posted by: kevin J Carden on 14 November 2016
Very odd, but as of this morning my Unitiserve is unable to find about half of my music collection stored on my NAS drives. When selecting a search by Artists, the menu has now been condensed to AB artists, CD artists, EF artists etc.,when it previously had separate search files for each individual letter. Many artists now don't appear at all.
If I stream directly from the NAS drives, all the music is still there, but it seems the Unitiserve can't now find it. Any thoughts appreciated...
Kevin - do you have a lot of downloads in the DOWNLOAD folder?
One thing that may be worth doing is going up through the 'tree' in your NAIM app, all the way through to the root level.
Select the server and then select: 'All Music'.
Adam
Thanks for this Adam, but afraid you've lost me immediately! Excuse my near total lack of facility.
Downloads : do you mean on my laptop? Can't see any downloads tab on the Naim app?...
Not sure what you mean by trees or roots either, sadly. Oh dear!
do you mean N-Serve?
In the Naim app, not nServe, go back to the first screen you get when you select the upnp input. This is the root. The other thing I'd do is turn the US off, leave it a minute, and turn it on again. This usually works, though it sounds very corny.
Thanks for clarifying HH. My root page shows 3 options:
All music : offers access to all recording formats, MP3 to HiRes.
Browse by Device : clicking on this offers me the option to select the back up NAS(only). Sure it used to offer both NASs. Sorry to be vague, but I spend 99.9% of my time using the 3rd option below..
CD Collection : set up by my dealers techie to offer access to all my CD quality music (as opposed to MP3 (on the drives, but not wanted on the main system) or HiRes (Unitiserve can't play). Previously this offered all my ripped CDs, but now missing most of them.
I've rebooted everything multiple times, including the router.
I have been playing with Ethernet cables from U/S and NAS's to the switch. Don't know if this might be the cause somehow?
Kevin
It seems that your US is a regular hard-disk version with a NAS used for back up.
Can you access it via it's IP address or n-Serve from a laptop?
One other thing I just noticed: when i do pull up a CD it lists the tracks as before, but whereas I used to just click on the name of the track to play, now it doesn't instantly play, but instead offers the same menu as clicking on the 3 dots to the right of the track name, i.e. ' play from this track', 'play this track' , 'queue next', 'queue last' or 'add to playlist'.

That's OK - that is a feature of a NAIM app
Adam, yes, should be able to - in devices right?

Nope. Is there any way you can find out what IP address your US has on your local network?
Alternatively - do you have an n-Serve installed on your Mac?
We need either of the above to check the status of your music STORES on your UnitiServe.
It looks to me like you have somehow turned on the A-Z index feature. If you go to Settings > UPnP Settings > A-Z Index Settings, and set 'Enable Index Feature' to False, then click Apply your files should show up normally.
I have described how to do this using N-Serve for Mac, but you can also do it using the Display Interface, which you will find if you type the Unitiserve IP address into a browser.
Chris - never heard of this one. Do you know what was it originally for? (Except for hiding Kevin's albums of course )
I've no idea, Adam. I guess maybe you can split up a very large library into chunks that are easier to browse, but I've never bothered to use it.
Chris, thanks. In my UpNP settings menu I'm offered only the following options:
Input enabled - y/n
Input name - allows renaming of UPnP input
Clear UPnP cache - y/n
UPnP compatibility mode - on/off
thats all I can see...
Take a look at the Naim desktop client or where ever you have it installed. Under the Music Library Tab go two ladder rungs from the top and expand albums rung. If all your rips and high res albums are displaying, click on each and see if the tracks show in the right side window.
If there appears to be a problem with either the total collection or tracks not showing go to the Tools tab. Expand the Settings and Functions ladder rung and click on System Functions. Click Rebuild DB in the right side window.
Reboot the US as per the instructions in the pop up window. This will take some time but when complete there is a good chance you will be able to access your collection.
Thanks Antmast. Will try that tomorrow and report back!

That looks like the settings menu in the Naim app, which controls streamers from iPhone/iPad. What you need is the N-Serve for Mac app if you have a Mac computer, or (on either Mac or PC) type the Unitiserve's IP address into a browser and find the settings there.
Thanks Chrissu. You're right, it was the iPad control app. I was referring to.
Ive now followed your advice on MacBook and can indeed reset to just A artists, B artists etc, so that part is fixable. Sadly, it still isn't picking up the missing albums, just recategorising the limited number of albums that it can find.
You could try rescanning the drive that has missing albums. Go to Network Shares, select the offending drive, and hit rescan.
And make sure the shares are active and not set to 'ignore'.

I was assuming that the shares were active, as some of his music is visible. My guess is that the OP has a lot of music, and the user configurable size limit for each alphabetical section is set too low to show them all. It seems like an odd setup, but I suppose Naim must have had their reasons for doing it like that.

That would be very odd though.
All my CDs are still ripping to the same share on a NAS. Perhaps it's differend with a hard-drive version.
Kevin - could you post a screenshot of your nServe app's view (shares etc) so that Chris and I can check the settings?
Wow! The rescan did the job! Thanks guys, especially Chrissu.
Artists are back to single letter too. Turns out that was simply because so many albums were missing that the number didn't reach the threshold (a number preset by my techie) to warrant categorising individually.
Happy now. Big thanks.
Good to hear your issue is resolved. Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Naim server configuration!!
Hi, I recently ripped 12 new discs on my Unitiserve..and suddenly my existing library of recordings disappeared from the N-serve library, even though both the new CD's and the existing recordings appeared on the NAS (newly ripped CD's were saved automatically in "MQ" folder and old files were under the generic "Music" folder). I rescanned store, and still no older files showed up in N-serve library. Moved all the old music files to the MQ folder where the new CD's were stored and still nothing more than the 12 newly ripped CD's show up (I rescanned store)...tried turning Uniti on and off again... I have already checked that All Music Files under (Mac) N-serve Maintenance is "True" ...Frustrated now after trying different permutations, any ideas? Thanks!
Are you saying that only the 12 albums are on the Serve, and that the rest are on the NAS? Or is it a SSD Serve, with everything on the nas? It may make a difference. Either way, try turning the Serve off and then on again - this should/may help it to find everything on the network. It's a long time since I had a Serve so can't help with anything more specific.
