Unitiserve suddenly can't find half my music

Posted by: kevin J Carden on 14 November 2016

Very odd, but as of this morning my Unitiserve is unable to find about half of my music collection stored on my NAS drives. When selecting a search by Artists, the menu has now been condensed to AB artists, CD artists, EF artists etc.,when it previously had separate search files for each individual letter. Many artists now don't appear at all.

If I stream directly from the NAS drives, all the music is still there, but it seems the Unitiserve can't now find it. Any thoughts appreciated...

Hi, I recently  ripped 12 new discs on my Unitiserve..and suddenly my existing library of recordings disappeared from the N-serve library, even though both the new CD's and the existing recordings appeared on the NAS (newly ripped CD's were saved automatically in "MQ" folder and old files were under the generic "Music" folder). I rescanned store, and still no older files showed up in N-serve library. Moved all the old music files to the MQ folder where the new CD's were stored and still nothing more than the 12 newly ripped CD's show up (I rescanned store)...tried turning Uniti on and off again... I have already checked that All Music Files under (Mac) N-serve Maintenance is "True" ...Frustrated now after trying different permutations, any ideas? Thanks!

What is the origin of your existing library? If it's CDs ripped on the Unitiserve, it should be in the MQ folder. Anything else should be in the downloads folder, and should not be moved from there. This assumes you have a current 2TB Unitiserve that has a downloads folder.

Hi Chrissu, I have a Unitiserve SSD so all files ( some HQ downloads, many MP3s etc) have been saved on the NAS, and I had no issues until I ripped these new CD's. I have since read a post on this forum, that the user should not move the files into HQ/MQ/LQ, as the Unitiserve will classify the recordings...So I have moved back the old files to the original location under Music on the shared Folder in the NAS.  But they don't show up in library regardless..

HungryHalibut, that is the one thing I did not do (turn off the server) I will try that now!

Tried reboot of server and Unitiserve SSD, and nothing yet showing up in the N-serve library (other than the 12 ripped CD's), but from past experience it sometimes takes hours to search out the files from the Share (even though there's nothing on it but music files...I will keep you posted...

You may have to 're-point' your UnitiServe to SHARE AND STORE folders on your NAS. MAake sure they are active and re-scan them.

This is best done from a desktop client.

Thanks Adam. By desktop client you mean using a windows browser (not Mac) , going direct to NSSRVXXXX?  I will try that as well.

Are you familiar with the Unitiserve Display interface, accessed by typing it's IP address into a browser? There you will find Settings > System Settings > Network Shares. Make sure the Share you use for non-CD rip music is there, and try refreshing it. CDs ripped on the Unitiserve need to be in a Music Store, so check the status of yours.

If all this is news to you, download the manual from the Naim website and have a read of the relevant pages.

What Adam has just described is essentially the same, but using the Desktop Client on a Windows computer instead of the Display interface.

Correct - that is what I meant.

Dosplay interface may be too limited if I remember correctly.

Thanks Chris, that IP address interface is the same as the http://NSSRVXXXX interface. I have been through the manual a few times, and all my settings seem to be correct, and consistent with all of the kind advice of yourself and others above. I have refreshed left right and centre..not sure what the problem is.  The Network Share (designated Music Store) that has contained all my music files now contains the following folders Music, HQ, MQ, LQ. And while the old files are saved in Music, the ripped go to MQ...and yet the Unitiserve simply doesn't read anything but the ripped CD's..Should the Music Store ONLY contain ripped Cd's?

STORE - this contains only music ripped by a UnitiServe

SHARE - this contains music downloaded by a user and added to a NAS.
A suitable SHARE folder must be created on a NAS and UnitiServe must be 'pointed to it' and 'be told' it's a SHARE folder.

Did you create the Music folder yourself? It should be in a separate Network Share. Keep the Music Store for CD rips in the MQ folder.

Well in principle you guys have sorted out the problem. The ripped CD's are now registering through the (new) music store location, and the network share is scanning to develop the list of contents. Thanks all!

Glad to hear you're up and running again. I guess the lesson to learn from this is: don't mess with the file structure by changing it using a computer, only via the DTC or Display Interface.

Well done! Agree with Chris - do not touch the Rip folder

I actually copied my ripped CD files over to the new Music Store MQ folder, as there were only a dozen...But noted - I should have created a new music store and transferred in between using Naim interface.  It was very relieving to see all the files again in N-serve, and randomly tested just fine..I do think the instructions in the manual (section 7) should be more explicit, highlighting from the beginning, that 2 different folders be created as you guys put it: one folder specifically designated by the NAIM interface as "Music Store" ONLY for the CD's ripped and a second folder designated as the "Network Share" for all remaining music. They could have then put the mechanics afterwards...it would have been so much more intuitive. Well, all is well that ends well. Thanks again!
