DVD5 Video Connection

Posted by: rsch on 15 November 2016

I connected  DVD5 to tv via Scart cable and it  was fine, (audio to Nait XS with Snaic 5 of course)

Then i changed connection for a better quality with DVI to HDMI cable, actually since the cable was too short, i had to put  an extension but doing so,  the video qualiy was totally unacceptable with layers of blue/green on images.

I 've been told  that DVI to HDMI is not a good idea for video quality. Is it true or there is a specific setting to do on the player to do ?

Regards

Roberto

I used a QED HDMI to DVI cable to connect to a pre-HDMI TV a while back and all seemed fine with none of the issues your describe. I did have to run a separate audio feed as the HDMi-DVI cable did not carry audio. Not sure about setting on the DVD5 though so perhaps others could advise. I would have thought that the DVD5 could be a little off the pace in terms of video qulaity these days but again I have no direct experience.

Roberto,

what firmware are you running?  IIRC, there were different settings and even different firmware to accommodate the peccadilloes of different displays via the DVI connection. Much will depend on your display - are you going RGB or YcBcr? Either way, unless the cable or adaptor are faulty, going DVI to HDMI shouldn't be a problem (only issues tend to be the dreaded HDCP compatibility).  At its best, the DVD5 had fantastic video performance (albeit limited to 576p) but you had to have it set up right (including display) as there was a lot to play with in the setup menus.  In my opinion it was at its best through the analogue RGBHV outputs into a suitable display and using the NAIM RGBHV BNC cabling.  I ran mine with a 42" 1024 x 1024 Fujitsu Plasma via the RGBHV BNC inputs and the picture was exceptionally film-like with skin tones in particular that are still of reference quality.

Try a different cable and have a look through all the menus.  It might also be an idea to check with Naim on your firmware - there were many!!

No problem Roberto.  You should be able to connect DVI-HDMI and have a good picture (subject to the quality of the scaler in the Toshiba).  Does the Toshiba accept a 576P input?  Some can't deal with the progressive scan, which the DVD5 outputs by default (except via SCART). However, as I say, check your settings and also FW with Naim.

Ok Richards, thanks. I 'll investigate with Lasa service centre.

Using a RGBHV to VGA adapter you should be able to connect the 5 BNC outputs of the DVD5 to the VGA socket of the Toshiba.
