CD player

Posted by: petzhou on 16 November 2016

Until recently I was using a Musical Fidelity X Ray cd player. CD'S are not as important to me as my vinyl but sold the x ray with the aim to buy a Naim cd player to match the rest of my system. My current system is LP 12.Ittock,Cadenza Red. Original XS amplifier and Flatcap 2x.

I see a CD5 for auction. Appreciate thoughts on adding this to my system and what would be a fair price to bid to.

Many thanks as always.

Wouldn't have an idea as to what this player is worth.

It might be a good idea to check the availability of replacement lasers and transport mechanisms before going ahead with the purchase.... you could end up with an expensive doorstop if the existing mech fails.

If it's the website I'm thinking of, use the 'advanced' search (towards top right of the page, in small letters) and tick the 'sold' box. This will give you a price of recent sold items.

My one-time CD5 was fixed by Naim. It was a few years ago. Best check with Steve Hopkins at Naim.

A CD5X would be a complimentary pairing with your Nait XS and FC2X. Balanced and you can use the FC2X to power both the Nait XS pre and the 5X analog out. You'll need an additional IC to connect a 5X to your FC.

Pleased it helped. I had CD5, FC2 and Nait XS and it was a very good system for me. I could easily go back there.

I agree with joerand on this one , I used to have a CD5 and it worked well for many years but I wouldn't say it was the ultimate CDP and I would be looking at a slightly better one if I was you.

Depending on where you are, have a look at authorised Naim dealers' used/ex-dem stock.

I'd rather pay a bit more and have some reliable recourse in case of potential problems.

Good luck.

What The Strat said.

...and if you get a later one it'll have a digital output (as well as analogue of course), and that will certainly come in useful at some future point, there are now many Naim boxes that accept a digital input signal besides the obvious DACs.

IMHO worth the additional wonga you'll have to pay for this model of CD player.  I eventually upgraded mine to an ex-dem CDX2, but the CD5XS is a very accomplished performer nonetheless.
