Why do you post on the Naim forum?

Posted by: Hook on 26 July 2011

Is it a social networking thing?   Do you feel a sense of community here?

Do you enjoy writing?  Does posting give you an opportunity to organize your thoughts?

Does it make you feel good to offer advice, and to help other people solve their problems?

Is it an ego thing?   Do you feel proud when your posts are well received by others?

Do you see the forum primarily as a technical resource?

Does the forum mean something different to you today than it did in previous years?  (Please, no more Hoop.la bashing -- we all understand that the forum should look a lot better than it does, and be easier to use.  I am simply asking here about what, if any, changing role this forum has played in your daily life.)

For those of you who used to post regularly, but now only post infrequently (or not at all, but maybe still check in once in a while), what made you decide to stop contributing?  Did some life event place new and unforeseen demands on your time?  Or did you just grow tired of discussing music, audio and/or the Naim brand?   Are you now spending your time on other forums, or did you decide that the whole idea of online community was a waste of time?

Lastly, I know that a bunch of you guys in the UK are friends with each other in real life.  What about the people you only trade posts with?  If the forum was shut down tomorrow, would you miss any of your "pen pals"?

A lot of questions....please feel free to comment on any or all of them.

And thanks very much for your thoughts!

Hook

PS - Some of you might be thinking this is rather a presumptuous post.  After all, asking people to talk about how they feel does presume a certain degree of familiarity.  So, in order for my questions to be just a bit less anonymous, here's who's asking.....

Cheers....y'all!

Guilty as charged on the Nom de Plume there John!

Must admit to being an infrequent flyer when it comes to the music room. I find I need to hear a band's output to convince me to buy.  I have made some good friends here and most of my inspiration to buy previously untried artists or albums has been sourced from the music they have exposed me to over the years.  One friend in particular has an incredible knowledge of the music out there and invariably when he comes round, he has a theme to his offerings - plus he has a fair handle on what I like and therefore what might interest me.  Most recently he got me into Daniel Lanois.

Apologies Brad I did not purposely mean to relegate you to just being another "poster". It was just that I had scanned the thread briefly as I didn't have much time before going off to work and I thought I would comment on something that caught my eye.

Sorry, I should have put the winkie in the first post.

It is one of the great things about meeting up with some of the other regulars and spinning some music, and discovering new artists.

Although some might question Whizzkid's choices......

Cheers

What a good question!

I tend to come on when I'm steeling myself for a new upgrade and want to get some feel for the potential pros and ons.

Despite a certain level of disinformation and not entirely well-informed contributions (possibly including from myself) I've managed to work out a better understanding of quite a few things on here.

It seems to me that it is a more tolerent place than it used to be - some people may say it is more boring, but I am happy to live without the provocativeness  that used to be prevalent.   Still - even at its worst, this has been an altogether more civilised place than some others (I speak as someone who used to spend time on a Pompey supporters forum - mutual respet was not a salient feature there).

John,

I used to love Deans posts,

He turned me on to some great music i had never heard of. before,

That used to be a great thing about the music room.

I asked Dean to make a list for me,a sort of top ten of things to try?(Before Spotty)

Over a few weeks he thought about it.

He didnt just post try this and that?

He gave me a great list of things to try after a few weeks of thought..

I had to mail ewemon/miles/Lontano and a few others that dont bother posting now last week with a question about a album.

Because i knew it would be quicker to get the answer i wanted.

Before Hooplas i would of put it on here and got a reply faster than by email and everyone on here would of had a heads up on a great  vinyl album release.

Its a shame so many dont bother now..

Ewemon - no apology needed but thanks anyway.

I have pondered the issue of posting or not and I have decided that the only way to have any influence on the success of this forum is to be an active contributor.  When all is said and done, this place isn't such a bad place and is far more friendly than previous incarnations.

Ditto.

I've actually dipped my toe back in the HiFi Corner as a result. This was where I started, and got some great advice too. I've never even looked at that section for months on end in the last few years but I guess I might be able to contribute usefully.

Am up very early this morning, and packing our car to head north.   We're spending the weekend doing some luxury camping on the south shore of Lake Superior, and enjoying the company of our Goddaughter's family (who also happens to also be our dearest friends in the world).   Am looking forward to warm days on a sandy beach with lots of little kids, and to wonderful live music each night at a tent called Big Top Chautauqua (Shuh - TAWK - wuh)...

My next look at the forum will be Monday night.  By then, I hope that Brad and Bruce's wonderful posts have been read by hundreds of members (and hundreds more guests considering membership).   Wouldn't that be cool?  I think so.

Later y'all.

After careful research, this forum(content) out performs the alternatives, it is crap to use but the rewards are better, although much much less than a year ago.

Was the forum so much better way back when? If judging by the posts of a well remembered very ex- member who still posts in a fishy way, what a t**t, glad I missed him! In fact there are many snide posters there, LF is too "specific"  and quiet.

So you lucky people will have me back to a greater or lesser extent, stop booing at the back there!

This forum is structurally a mess, and as pointed out by many, the owners don't seem to care that it is so disliked, it's such a shame,. Still it hasn't stopped my system sounding great, and won't stop me buying further products, but they are very unlikely to be new.
