Hi Thomas -

I would convert one album to WAV, and then compare it to the original FLAC version using Asset to  transcode to WAV on-the-fly.

If you can hear a difference, then batch convert everything.  But first make sure that you have a good plan for managing tag data and album art in a WAV container.

Looking forward to reading about your decision!

Welcome to the fold Thomas

The choice of filetype is up to you - many here swear by wav, some by aiff (same thing IMHO with better tagging) and some by flac (myself included).

If you can hear a difference then go ahead - I gather Asset can transcode on the fly from flac to wav but others here can show you how.

If you want to do it manually XLD is an excellent program.

Hi Thomas, this is an interesting one. In my expierience it depends what you are using for replay.

When I used an NDX/555ps with its own DAC I felt FLAC sounded a little fuzzy compared to WAV. Adding the nDAC on to the NDX and  putting a RF choke around the DC1 I don't really notice a degradation any more. Its funny I did initially but its almost as if the NDX/nDAC has burnt in more - as I can't hear any differences now.

Asset does transcode, and again with nDAC on the NDX with RF choke on DC1  can't hear differences where as before I could.

So this is what  I do - although not really any science behind it.

a) CD Compliations and HiDef : use FLAC

b) Standard album CDs: use WAV

Hallo there.

Thanks for your replies.Good to hear others views on this question.

I did some small tests on converting flac to wav but I have decided to keep

my flac files. I beleive that the deffence is too small to convert 450+ album

and most of them I never put my ear to. I will maybe rerip some of my favorites

and future album into wav. My RipNAS can convert differents file formats with

no problems but anyway the flacs sound great.

Thanks again and have a nice weekend. Me myself and my famillie are starting

our 3 weeks holidays today.
