Android App for HDX?

Posted by: sktn77a on 23 November 2016

Yes, I know, this question has been asked many times before (with a notable absence of responses from anyone associated with Naim).  But, really, is there no way to control my HDX from my Samsung Galaxy S7?

Does the Samsung device supports flash? If the HDX is installed in a home network the Front Panel Display interface can be duplicated by any Flash enabled web browser...

See the HDX manual for more details...

IIRC I used to use FF with a flash plugin, I now have a 272 so can't be more specific

Thanks.  The S7 kinda does and kinda doesn't support Flash(!)  Firefox won't work but Dolphin and Puffin might.  Unfortunately, the HDX manual on the NAIM website doesn't appear to explain anything in a way I can identify and/or understand how to use a Flash-enabled browser(?)

I think what Klout is referring to is the control interface you get by typing the HDX IP address into a browser. Try it on any computer and you'll find it. I'm not sure if there's a workaround to make this visible on a mobile device, and even it there was, I'm not sure it would be that easy to use on a small screen. The easy option would be to bite the bullet and get an iPad.

+1 for getting a pre-owned iPad for this.

I use to do this on a phone and a tablet, obviously the tablet was a better experience but you do need a flash enabled browser/flash plugin

I used Android FF with a shortcut to launch straight to the interface (setting the HDX to static helps here)

Remember to configure the shortcut to enable the plugin automatically to avoid propmts

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but does anybody know if its possible to add the HDX to the Android version of the Naim App of preinstalled streamers (it is a streamer after all)?  I tried adding it manually but the only manual additions permitted on the android phone version are the newer streamers.

In Naim's terms, it's not a streamer, and the Naim app won't control it.

Actually, AFAIK in 'Naim terms' it's 'legacy equipment'

;-)

Actually, in Naim's description, it is a streamer and it is still a current (lot legacy) product.

Naim describe it as a hard disk player and server, not a streamer. As I understand it, a (Naim) streamer receives a stream from a UPnP server over a network.

Well, I don't pretend to be a digital audio expert, so I won't try to define "streamer" vs "server" but here's the HDX description from the NAIM website:

"The HDX delivers convenience without compromise. The world’s first audiophile hard disk music player, it was also our first step into digital music delivery – and today, several years after its launch, it still sets the performance standards in its class. Invest in an HDX and you’re buying more than just a single point of access for your digitally stored music collection. It can operate as a high-performance hub for your whole home, streaming the songs you love into any room equipped with a compatible Naim Audio device. Sound quality, whatever format is being replayed and wherever it is being accessed - is never less than absolute. We’d accept nothing less."

Bottom line is, NAIM should have an android app to control their products (specifically, in this case, their $9,500 HDX)!

It's been discussed here before, but I think there will be no further development of the HDX. The release of the Core makes me think that the HDX will be out of production soon...

An Android app will almost certainly not happen. Naim haven't even bothered to support BBC HLS radio streams so sound quality took a step back in the radio department, there are still bugs that crop up from time to time (such as the front panel and app getting out of sync) and it frequently fails to download  metadata when ripping - I'm finding dbPoweramp more satisfactory these days. No, software support is poor.

I'm looking North of the border for its replacement.

Yes, that's what i feared.  Pity, for a company that prides itself on long-term product support, that they appear to have given up on software support.  I guess they are a hardware company and maybe should leave computerized systems and software to others.

Well, what I should have said was that it's only my opinion that software support has been poor in the context of this particular product. The pure streamers (NDX etc. ) have fared better.

I've no doubt that Naim take software very seriously and are working hard to improve their core product range, also that alternative offerings from other manufacturers may not be the panacea I'm looking for - but actions speak louder than words and once bitten is twice shy.
