NDS digital output

Posted by: David O'Higgins on 26 November 2016

I recently connected the digital out connection of my NDS to DAC-V1, to use the latter as a headphone amp. I was banging my head off the wall for a long time, because I couldn't get it to work. Eventually I realised that the digital output of the NDS is set to 'Off' by default. Presumably, this is for sonic reasons. Anyone know what kind of degradation arises from switching the digital output on?

Have you tried and heard a difference?

According to Naim one should run only one output out - digital or analogue.

But than again... why would anyone want to run a digital out of a reference-level DAC is beyond me.

NDS is a reference level streamer, the reference level DAC is the NDAC.

Hi, yes this mode feature is on all the streamers.. you can run the streamers in transport and/or DAC mode.. Slightly different electronics and DSP functions are used for either modes.. and the creation of different high frequency transport streams are created internally. The idea is you disable the electronics, functions and resultant signals associated with the mode not used to give ever so slightly reduced interference and loading for either a more precise transport clocked stream or analogue output. To my ears the results are very subtle..

Presumably to use a better sounding DAC...

Adam, as I said in my question, it was to be able to use headphone amp. possibility of the V1-Dac.

David

Wouldn't a Headline work better - this way you will benefit from the sound of your beatutiful 552.

Yes, but my headline has a dodgy volume control, which I haven't got around to addressing. I was taking a path of least resistance!

The two Chords I mentioned are reportedly excellent with headphones (I haven't tried myself)
