F1 2016 Redux

Oroginal thread closed, so...

Congrats to Nico...Never cheered on Vettel as much as today though.

It was a great watch indeed.

Nico wins the world but Hamilton's credibility remains intact - & nice to see Vettel with the red blood coursing in his veins again.

Would it more accurate to say that this is the Championship Hamilton lost, rather than Rosberg won?

Or is that tad cruel?

I agree [@mention:1566878603918516]. Lewis has had more car issues to deal with and if it wasn't for that he'd have another title. I guess that comes with the job. For me Lewis is a better driver. Never been a Nico fan. Tantalisingly close race.

German team world champions, German driver world champion....is this more Mercedes clever engineering?

It is...

At the end of the day a better driver won. A better driver meaning the one who made the best of everything given the circumstances. I never liked Lewis's arrogance and stupidity on the track. He is a very gifted driver, but flawed and thus incomplete in my eyes.

If positions had been reversed, Nico wouldn't dare back up Lewis because he knows Lewis would just go past him. Lewis is a faster and more complete racing driver. However I'm pleased Nico has won a championship, a watershed moment for him. If Lewis didn't already have 3 to his name and more to come, I'd be disappointed for him but he'll be back.

Would Vettel have prevented a fellow countryman winning the championship ...if it had come down to it?

G

Posted on: 27 November 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Doubt that...

Posted on: 27 November 2016 by Finkfan

Yeah, it's unlikely.

Looking forward to next year now and maybe a little more completion from other teams?

All gifted individuals can be flawed in someway, but I don't think in formula 1 , you can afford to say to any other driver ' after you sir' you have to let the other drivers know that you are not prepared to give way....

After the race it's all about being sporting and gracious in defeat..... And possibly that's the area Hamilton needs to improve on....

I doubt it. I think his late lunging was to please the crowds.

Or do a Senna. Hamilton thinks he's Senna reincarnated. Let's hope he's wrong about that, or at least not entirely right!

I don't think he would. For all the stuff thrown at him, I don't think Hamilton is quite as dangerous on the track as Senna or Schumacher. Both remembered as greats, but both capable of potentially seriously hurting a fellow driver on the track to get their way once the red mist is up whether Prost, Mansell, Hill or Villeneuve. I don't think Lewis quite has that in him.

I suspect Lewis will get acres of press coverage around a perceived lack of grace, however post race I must have heard him congratulate Nico at least 6 times, he went over to congratulate him in parc ferme and waited for him to finish sharing the moment with his mechanics first before hugging him and shook his hand twice on the pocium. The guy had just lost his championship by 5 points, cut him some slack.

I agree with this. These guys are proper competitive. If winning is everything (as it has to be if you want to win) then it's perfectly normal to get moody and in a huff when you don't win.

Ive been karting many times in the past for fun and have seen some pretty surprising stuff from mates of mine and myself I must admit.

I would have more respect for Hamilton as a driver when he wins a World Championship in not the best car on the grid as both Schumacher and Alonso did.

Rosberg and Hamilton have behaved like petulant children in equal measure and I don’t think either of them to be either entirely deserving or suitable role models.  Unlike Hamilton, Rosberg has never told bare faced lies to the stewards then whinged when found out (Australia 2009) – “It’s not my fault. They told me to do it. Honestly, this is worse than being in prison. I am innocent and have been wrongly convicted”. Nor has he played the race card (Monaco 2011) when he played bumper cars all afternoon and when reprimanded tried to blame it on the colour of his skin.

Flawed genius syndrome with toxic levels of narcissism.  And such a good driver. It takes the shine right off.

Yep, off the track I agree Lewis can be a bit of a twonk.

What, like in 2008 when his team mate finished 7th? I think most people would acknowledge that whatever he drives, on the track he's one of the best out there.

Theirs a strong case for suggesting Schumacher was somewhat unsporting in his will to win....

I think fans for either driver will find fault in the other. They have both made mistakes on and off the track. These are highly paid youngsters at the top of their game. They don't live in the same world as most of us. Emotions run high. The sport will sadly miss the great JB behind the wheel. A genuinely nice guy

It's a great shame he's spent the last few years driving a Mclaren Robin reliant.....

Yeah [@mention:50422349809511500]. Even after the the upgrade to Mclaren Honda jazz still no joy.

To quote from Metallica 'sad but true'. Regardless - one of the best GPs ever is Jason's epic win in Canada. At some stage he was last if I recall. True genius at work.

The only reason NR won the championship was car reliability & specifically LH's engine failure in Malaysia,  that was his only DNF in 2016 apart from the infamous coming together when they both DNF's meaning LH finished 18 races, NR finished 19.   Outside of that there was little to choose between them but LH comes out tops on the stats averages,   race wins was 9/9, LH had more poles 11/8 & more podiums 16/15.

Wasn't it 10 wins for Lewis, 9 for Nico?
