SL DIN - XLR or a NAC 252

Posted by: Acred on 27 November 2016

My system consists of CDX2 with 555ps, 282 with Supercap, NAP 300. Neat Ultimatum XLS, SL speaker cable and interconnect. The 300 has the stock XLR/DIN cables. I don't know whether to updrade these to SL or upgrade the pre to a 252?

Has anyone upgrade the cables on the 300 after fitting SL speaker cables and interconnect, what did that upgrade bring?

I've got the full SL loom and the XLRs were the last piece added. They make a difference for sure and there's a synergy when the full loom is in place.  Much more detail and the whole flow of the music seemed better. It was easily enough for me to invest but you'll want to try them yourself before committing.

Even more important is to try a 252 against your 282. The need for this is quite separate from the merits of the SL XLR as the two pre-amps have very different presentations and tend to divide opinion quite sharply on here.  Some love the refinement and accuracy of the 252. Others, like me, found the 252 lacks the excitement of the 282 so prefer the latter. My strong recommendation is you try the 252 before committing.

Finally, I had the full SL loom when my amp set up was 282/SCDR/300DR, and that set-up revealed the merits of the SL cables very clearly.

I'm firmly in the 'love 252 camp'. I managed around 3 months with my 282 - we never got on too well. You have all a SuperCap already so it will be an easy setup.

First thing I would do is to DR your 300. It is a huge improvement

Sorry for diverting the thread but what is the biggest step change 282hc>282sc or 282sc>252sc?

For me it was the second one 282SC > 252SC

Totally agree. If possible I would look towards a 552.

I had NDS/282/SupercapDR/250DR/SL speaker cables/SL Interconnect/Witch Hat DIN-XLR and upgraded to the 252 with the remainder of the system unchanged. I had a lengthy home demo of the 252 but have not heard the SL DIN/XLR in my system.

I happen to love the added subtlety and insight the 252 brings but I agree with others on here that a home demo is vital as some have mentioned, preferring the 252 over a 282 is not a forgone conclusion. As I already had a Supercap DR with my 282, 'upgrading' to a pre loved 252 and trading in my 282 (of the same vintage as the 252) was financially relatively painless.

The rather predictable advice as usual is to home demo both the 252 and the SL DIN/XLR assuming you have a friendly Naim dealer nearby. Remember the SL cables need a fair bit of run in so try to borrow a set of DIN/XLRs that are well worn.

Same hear much preferring the 252 this whilst listening to a new system earlier this year a demo should decide your preference I would also try to demo the DR versions of both the Supercap and 300 better to sort the Black boxes before the cables?

defo boxes before cables, 252 is a big step up from a 282
