Sound Leak

Posted by: Ropehawn on 28 November 2016

Just recently I have noticed that if I turn the volume down all the way or put the 172 on mute I am still hearing the source come through the speakers at a very low level - I have never heard this before is this normal... any ideas?

Its happening across the board... iRadio, Tidal, Roon Bridge through Raspberry Pi digitally

Current Config: Stageline (isupply) - Sonos Connect Digital - Roon Bridge Digital - TV Optical > NAC N 172 > NAP 155xs

That doesn't sound right, but I admit I have almost zero experience with the 172. All other preamps I have used go silent on mute.

I've just muted my 272 and it goes completely silent. I'd have expected the 172 to be the same.

When I turn the volume all the way down on my SN2 I can still hear the music very faintly with my ear next to the speaker. Muting completely silences the music. Not sure why your mute wouldn't do the same. Must be something in the design of the 172, but yes, it does seem unexpected. I guess you could email Naim support just to be assured it's normal.

Can you confirm this is in fact from the source and not actually something else? Not unheard of to pick up local radio via the speaker cables which actually gets amplified by the power amp. It still needs to be connected to the preamp to make a circuit but not necessarily originating there.

Can you perform this sanity check and confirm this is truly the selected source that is still heard?

Agree with the above though. Muting actually breaks the circuit on the other mentioned amps so even radio RF should go silent. Unless the 172 works totally differently.

I did the sanity check and it is in fact the selected source that is playing through and it is happening both on volume 0, mute from volume 0 & mute from any volume level

Going to email support

I just tried with my 272.

At a volume setting of '0' I can hear the sound at a very low level - i.e. only just barely audible with my ear right inside the bass/mid cone, and the signal is pretty much buried in the slight power amp noise.  However when muted it goes completely leaving only the slight noise.

Same with my 172 here, tiny bit of volume through the speakers with dial at 0.  It's never bothered me.  Maybe it'd shut it up if you set all the input trims to a negative value.  But I wouldn't bother, it doesn't really affect anything, and you can just press stop if you want to.

On my 172 I get sound from my source when the volume is set to 0, you do have to put your ear next to the speaker to hear it so no concern to me. Mine goes silent on mute. Input trims are all 0.
