Cannot stop the UnitiServ playing from desktop!

Posted by: Allan Milne on 30 November 2016

I usually use the IOS app for controlling my UnitiServ(US) but last night I was playing some music and working on my computer so fired up the Naim Desktop Client.

Use this for some management services but had never used it before to control playback ...

... navigated through my collection ok and started an album playing

... but dam it - I couldn't find anywhere to stop the playing!

I had to go back to my IOS NServ app to stop playing so I could get to bed

... I know I could have just left it playing and swopped the input on the pre to silence it but that is not nice

Have I messed something?

I'm blind and using the Jaws screenreader to accesss my PC and sometimes it doesn't read back all the controls that are available so it might be that the stop control is just "invisible" to me.

I'm 99% certain, from memory, that you can stop it from the DTC. It does sound as though the screen reader missed the control.

Hello Allan,

On the Desktop client software, playback functions are available under the 'Action' option of the application menu. Perhaps the Jaws screenreader can be pointed to this ?

Hi Jan,

In the action menu there is only a 'Play' option (other than the queue and randomised play) option - no stop or next track, etc.

Hi Allan

Is it Windowz or Mac?

In a Mac nServe the play / stop button are the same - top left corner. There is a cluster of 3 buttons in that area: rewind / PLAY / forward.

PLAY doubles up as STOP.

Hi Adam,

I thought you might have something to say on this

It is the windows NDC; I thought, like you say about the Mac, that the 'play' option under the actions menu might act as a toggle but it wasn't - it just restarted playing of the album from the start.

Ok - now you made me get my Windows-based work laptop
The nServe app has a different layout. The playback control virtual buttons are in the top right corner. In the current version of the app, there are 9 buttons. Starting from left to right they are:

  • Shuffle
  • Loop / repeat
  • Back (whole track)
  • Back rewind
  • Stop
  • Play
  • Forward rewind
  • Forward (next track)
  • Rip mode toggle button

Hi Adam,

Now is this a typo or is there an 'NServ' app for windows? or is this a windows 10 app?

I am using the Naim Desktop Client. If you are correct about this group of buttons then my screenreader certainly doesn't find it when I'm tabbing through the controls.

No big deal since I normally use the NServ IOS anyway and I believe there is to be no desktop app for the UnitiCore either

Thanks Adam for all the effort,

Allan

There is no app for Windows. Windows uses the DTC.

Posted on: 30 November 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Allan - you are of course right. In Windows it's called 'Naim Desktop Client' and my work laptop still uses Windows 7 Enterprise.
The Naim Desktop Client version I used is 4.0.16.1180

In the Apple world everything is called an APP - even programmes downloaded for regular MacBooks, because one downloads them via an App Store.
That's why I wrote app and used an Apple name - nServe.
Apologies for creating the confusion.

Hi Adam,

oh you poor mac person, you are so limited with only 1 word

In Windows we have apps, applications, static libraries, dynamic libraries, windows applications, console applications, windows store apps, ... and all mean something different

Half the time in the Microsoft world confusion arises because of lack of precision in the use of terminology; that doesn't bother me since as a lapsed mathematician I understand the necessity of precision and the use of language but OMG when we have to talk with those bloody users confusion reigns supreme

Anyway, back to the OP, it seems there are definite issues with the NDC in terms of accessibility, much more than I had thought. I can't even find out what version of the NDC I'm running since the 'about' dialog only tells me the application's name! I do know it is the latest though since I had to get the US upgraded because it wouldn't work at all with the NDC a month ago when I installed it.

I might turn in an email to Naim about this but if there is to be no desktop client with the UnitiCore then there seems little likelihood that anything will get done.

... so back to the IOS ap,

Allan

If you type the Unitiserve IP address into a browser, you get the 'display interface' which, like N-Serve for Mac, has a pause button. (Like N-Serve, it's pause, not stop, which I find mildly irritating, but at least you get silence if you need it.) I've no idea if a screenreader can read these buttons, though.

Hi Chris,

Hadn't thought of that

... presents a Flash interface in the browser with every button labelled as unknown - great help

Worth a try and thanks again,

Allan

That's a bit harsh.

Thanks for pointing it out - spelling was never my forte. Of course I meant 'back'.

... of course you did Adam

Way back years ago the player controls could be labelled and navigated to with a screen reader, but with I think the update to 1.6 something changed and there was no way to get to the controls, not that I have found, and I have used quite some time searching.

With a few modifications the rest of the DTC is however accessible and much much better than any iOS app!

It is because of the DTC  I probably will have my  dead  ns01 repaired unless the cost is out of this world.

You should get the remote that is supplied with the HDX and the other servers, this will give you the player controls and control Naim pre's and the inputs on Ndac. The layout of the buttons on the remote is good, but it is a good idea to create a file with the list of the buttons. I have one I can send you if you get theremote.

What screen reader do you use?

Hi Claus,

I use the Jaws screenreader, just updated to version 18 yesterday.

I didn't know there was a remote for the UnitiServ, I use the NAP 202 remote quite happily so any info on the US remote would be welcome.

I must say that I find the IOS NServ app not too bad at all although my biggest bugbear is that they use naïve alphabetic ordering on first names rather than on surnames - no excuse for this, I do the latter quite happily on the software I write; in fact they should also ignore any prefix 'The' on group names as well so that "The Beatles" is ordered on "Beatles"!

The DTC isn't too bad but its navigation and operation take a little getting used to.

The remote is called: NAIM Server Remote.

Posted on: 01 December 2016 by Allan Milne

that is what I like about this forum

... not the geeky techno stuff but the obvious that is overlooked

I have checked the US remote out and see it isn't shipped with the box - hence my ignorance - and also I do have a vague recollection of reading about it when the US was purchased but I had implied that this was only for use with an attached VGA display.

So, just to confirm, the remote can work without any display connected?

... I realise this might limit its functionality but even if all I get is back/pause/next this would be great!

I'll be phoning my dealer when he opens in 30 mins

Claus - I would like your text file on the remote keys if you don't mind - I do the same for all my remotes too!

My email is allan.milne@gmail.com

Thanks,

Hi,

I will mail you with the description of the remote and my very simple jaws script/configuration files.

The really fantastic feature of the dtc is the treeview with all the different ways of selection music, album, artist, latest, most played, internet radio, and the ability to view music on each share and connected device, or in the lists with all the music the server can access, and since first letter navigation works it is much faster than any app when you are a keyboard user.

The search and the ability to filter what you search for is also good, even though you have to use tab to get to the search or go button, and you have to tab again to go to the search results.

You cannot start a track or a radio station from an album  without using the mouse, this is what I have made a  script for, and some basic jaws configurations.

As I remember the view needs to be set to player and maintanense for the  treeview to show up, but I believe this is the default view.

Claus - this will be fantastic, thanks!

If you approve, I'd like to chat further with you via email when I get your response ... don't want to fill up this forum with stuff that is only applicable to the two of us ... or are there any more blind/visually-impaired users out there?

Thanks again,

Allan

The serve doesn't have a stop control. Just select a track then select "play this track" then swipe the line at the top to the end.
