My Hi-line smells like an ash tray
Posted by: Latte on 02 December 2016
I bought a hi-line one month ago from ebay and found it has strong smell of smoke. I complained to the seller but s/he apologized gave me a discount and therefore I accepted it. I thought it was no big deal but I have been trying to clean it with alcohol, soap, swipe and vinegar but all in vain. I have also tried to blow it with hair dryer - the smell in progress really made me sick but no much better thereafter. I am now wrapping the cable with baking soda and hope a miracle will happen. Just wonder how hi-line is made that the sheath trap so much cigarette tar inside? Anyone has the same problem?
I've never sniffed my HiLine...
I sniffed my Hiline after reading this post. It's a very recent warranty replacement less than five months old. No discernable odor to it.
Do you get the smell when you hold the cable very near to your nostrils or when it's two to three feet away.
Keeping it somewhere warm (not too warm) with an air current is probably your best bet. To reek it must be giving off volatiles, it will release them quicker at a higher temperature but you don't want to go so high you'll damage the insulation, the air current will prevent an equilibrium. A airing cupboard that vents into a loft void would be about right. On the other hand you could just fit the damn thing in the system and stop fretting or sell it on.
Good thread. You have to be so careful buying used. I bought an amp once on that well known auction site and it arrived in the worst packaging and state ever. It STANK of smoke, and the once grey snake was yellow, it was just foul. When I messaged the seller he claimed not to be a smoker (hellooooooo?!)
Even leaving it on my shelf made my room smell funny so I just sent it back.
Incidentally I bought a Powerline recently (used but new) and it smelt rather nice. I do like the smell of new stuff! ![]()

Before the treatments with baking soda, I could smell the disgusting stink from my sofa which is 10 feet away. Now it is improved to just noticeable in 1 foot distance.
Leave it outside for a few days. Ozone will get rid of the smell.
Preferably leave it somewhere that's shelterd from the rain.![]()
Now I have to ask the question everyone's been avoiding so far.... does the smell impact the sound?
or other way round - will all those air / cryo treatments improve it?

This might help ...........

That sounds really bad. I hope you would get the stink sorted out soon.
I am not sure if this would be a good idea though. You could spray perfume on the cable (not the plugs) and see if it can nullify or neutralise the smell (or stink) if all else fails.
The problem is a cable is something you can sneak in unnoticed but if it then stinks it rather gives the game away!!!!

I once sneaked in a pair of B&W 803s to replace slightly smaller 804s. The 804's were moved quickly into the garage for packing prior to sale. It was my daughter visiting a few weeks later who announced "Mum, aren't those different speakers in the lounge?" Don't you just love your kids?

I admire your audacity - if you seriously think you can get away with smuggling a speaker in!!!!!!

It took my wife a few weeks to notice the N-Sub I smuggled in - I had to hide it behind the sofa, though.

This put a BIG smile om my face, lovely story!!
We have joint accounts so I always have to confess and take the grief!
My 12 year old daughter has eagle eyes - I recently bought home a set of SL cables and she delighted in asking 'How much?'....and ' I could get pairs and pairs of Ugg boots and Superdry hoodies for that'
There's no hiding anything in this house!
I think we need a new thread on this 'what hi-fi component have you smuggled in' ![]()
Here we go.... a new thread to share our wonderful clandestine stories
