SN2 as pre into NAP250DR
Posted by: Elevensheep on 03 December 2016
I'm experimenting with connecting a borrowed 250DR to my SN2.
How does the connection work?
Does the connection go from the DIN5 pre-amp out from back of the SN2 into then 250DR or does the connection start from the DIN4 Bi-amp of the SN2?
thanks in advance
David
Connect to the bi amp out. Unless you have a HC connected to the SN in which case you'd connect the 250 to the HC
I recently did this on my SN with HCDR. Sounded fantastic!!
Thanks!
And what a surprise, it's in the manual! Who would think of looking there?

You're kidding me!!
There is even a section with using a HiCap ![]()
@ Finkfan: was the test with NAP250 a worthy experiment?
Hi Adam
Yes it was. I know convention says go for the xps but if a bargain comes up, a 250DR is a fantastic amp and what it adds to the SN is stunning! I like the idea of keeping the SN as a pre too as it has the DAC, which I don't use much, but I do on occasion listen to the radio through my sky HD box.
Using the original SN with a 250DR is not entirely sensible, as the amp is too good for the preamp of the SN.

I'm actually considering that as an interim step, ultimately replacing the SN with a streamer/dac/preamp of some description.
Of course you're right HH. And SN/250DR is not my final system. However is does sound rather good and is a great upgrade on the journey to audio nirvana!

It's a great upgrade Winky. Many may not think it a great idea, but when you can only buy one box at a time, it's a great combo.
Ok, that makes sense. Having an unbalanced setup for a while is almost inevitable unless you can afford to upgrade the whole caboodle in one fell swoop, which is not something most people can or choose to do.

I've had a 250DR on my SN2 for about 8 months and its a hugely enjoyable combination . Yes its a stepping stone and maybe a little unbalanced but I don't spend any time worrying about what I don't have , it sounds wonderful . I will add a new Pre amp at some stage but will wait for something similar to the 272 (372??) with the new streaming architecture , at least the wait will be an enjoyable one .
I've heard the SN/250dr/HC, all I can say is it sounds very very good...a nice step on that ladder to audio ecstasy..... Hey I like that phrase... ![]()

Unfortunately the explanation in the manual (including the diagram you have quoted above) isn't very clearly. Specifically, do you connect the DIN cable to bi-amp terminal for bi-amping only, OR, as I intend to use the SN2 as a pre only, should i be using the pre-amp out terminal on the back of the SN2?
Thankfully, Finkfan's explanation above helped answer the question.

Yes the Bi-amp terminal is the one to use here . I called Naim at the time to double check .
Please report how it sounds when you've had a good listen.
We may not hear back from [@mention:1566878603953355] for a while!! Enjoy!

That looks wrong to me. With the link plug still in place, isn't the SN power amplifier still being fed?
Yes it is

The picture seems perfectly clear. It shows speakers connected to the power amp and not to the Supernait. If you were biamping you'd connect speakers to both. With the additional amp connected as in the picture, the internal amp is still powered but has nothing to do as there are no speakers connected to it. Anyway, the main thing is that you've got it working.
If you remove the link, will the pre section still work? Or is there power coming from, and being split at, one of the pins on the 4 pin?

Thinking about it, that can't be right. I guess the pre will always work. Removing the link will just kill the poweramp section.

So can you remove the link plug and just plug the 250 into the biamp out??
