Retro-fit DAB to 272?
Posted by: rjstaines on 03 December 2016
Does anyone know if the FM/DAB module can be retro-fitted to a NAC-N272 ?
It would be so nice to be able to discard my Sony tuner that's providing DAB, & in particular Radio 4 Xtra
...and if the suggestion is to tune in to internet radio to find this station... yes, I know you can do this, but it's just so convenient, when you want to listen to the radio, to just switch your preamp to a tuner that's already receiving this broadcast. Call me lazy and you'd be quite right, but you know what they say about lazy folk... if you want a job done quickly give it to a lazy person ! (and that's quite right).

I'm sure I've read somewhere that this can't be done, but it would be worth asking Naim directly and smiling sweetly.

Ah, the old 'sweet smile'... used to work a treat when you had to talk to real people, before email or texting was invented
But nowadays we're limited to these damned 'emoticons'... still, must be worth a try, HH, I'll give it a go. What do you think would be the effectiveness of a few of these... ![]()

...pretty convincing I'd say, eh?
Not so sure: The effect may be more like ![]()
I checked that for an NDX once and could not be done. So I guess N272 would be a similar story.

How is switching to a DAB or FM preset easier than switching to an iRadio preset?
I wouldn't bother with DAB but FM is good and it works even when your broadband is down! Switching to FM isn't instant though because it's a SDR module so takes a few seconds to sort itself out.
Naim will say but I thought I saw something in the forum recently which said it could be retro-fitted to a 272 by the factory.

It's not so much the switching to the preset as switching to the device that has the preset already selected. This is usually just a button push on a remote handset to select 'tuner' on the preamp, and it comes on instantly (I like instant - my tuner is usually tuned to R4Xtra). My experience of selecting i-radio presets is that it's nothing like 'instant' (bear in mind I don't have super fast broadband). As I said, call me lazy if you like. When you get to my age, you'll discover that you no longer have the time to mess around with internet radio presets... life really does become too short... so much music, so little time !
......but.......you have a TURNTABLE!!!!!!!! ![]()

Well spotted but a turntable, as you're aware, takes even longer than i-radio to bring to life. Please accept there are times when you just want to slump into your chair, press 'tuner' and let the cares of the day drift away.
There are times too, admittedly, when you want to go exploring your music catalogue or even the thousands of i-net stations... these times are more often associated with having just taken ones vitamins or opened a bottle of something red (for me that is).

Welcome to my world.....
(a glass of something red also works in this situation).

Best of all worlds....
I do the same: a number of presets for radio stations - love that my NDX just switches from FM to iRadio from California and than to some DAB.
Turntable, hi-res audio from a server and then some BluRay audio into nDAC.
