Flac play back
Posted by: DarkWhisper on 03 December 2016
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i'm in need of advice.
I've been buying flac files to use with my Fiio X5 Gen 2, put ive started to run out of space on the micro cards.
What direction do i have to look at for playing the on the main Naim rig.
I mean how can i put this.
what kinda ways are they to play flac on a hifi.
My Niam hifi is upstairs and the pc is down stairs.
Was thinking of copying everything to a large external HDD and taking it upstairs and connecting it to a tablet to play the music though music bee out a 3.5mm - Rca put will this play flac that way though.
I have all of my music on a NAS drive, which is accessible by anything attached to the same network. Works a treat and with 2TB of space, a heck of a lot more capacity than micro cards.
Auralic aries mini would be a simple way to play music files from a hdd to your hifi, you dont even need a dac as it has line out (as well as other output connections).
What budget?
What level of quality are you expecting?
Do you already have a NAS drive?
I've got nothing except my Fiio X5 Gen 2. which i run though line out 3.5 mm to RCA. What to keep every thing in line with what iv got at this moment. Am completely out my depth with this one, as iv only had CD and Vinyl.
Naim cd5 xs CD Player
Naim Nait XS 2 Amp
Naim Flat Cap xs PS
Neat sx3 Speaker
Was looking at a network player. (This may noy be what i need) Need to fully understand the ins and out of what i need and cost. put as my Flac music collection is growing it becoming a pain to copy new files and deleting old just to play on hifi.
ive got a external Drive which am going to be using for holding my music. just need to work out the middle bit.
Thanks for you advice and further advice i a unfamiliar way of play back.
Network player is a good direction. ND5XS would fit neatly with the rest of your range. I suggest you read up a bit on this particular piece of Naim gear.
The most common way of streaming music is to set up a local NAS running UPnP software. Network player is then connected to the network and its analogue outputs to your amp.
I would go for the NAS and streamer option too. As Adam says, an ND5XS would fit nicely into your system. If you rip all your CDs and store them on the NAS, along with your FLAC downloads, you no longer need a CD player. You then have a single store for all of your digital music, and you can transfer it to SD cards for portable use easily when required.
To run a streamer like this you will need to run a network cable to your HiFi, i.e. a Cat5e Ethernet cable from your router. This can be a bit tricky if a long cable is needed, but it's not expensive, and a network player needs a decent network to run on, so don't neglect this if you do decide to start streaming.
Assuming you're expecting the same or better quality of playback compared to your CD5 XS, then an ND5 XS will fit in nicely.
Connect this via a Cat5e cable to a network switch (e.g. Netgear GS105, but others will do fine).
Connect another Cat5e cable from the network switch to a simple basic model NAS (many people on the forum recommend Synology or QNAP) *
Connect another Cat5e cable from the network switch to your broadband router.
Connect another Cat5e cable from the network switch to your PC.
Install the NAIM app on your Tablet, or 'Phone.
Using your PC, put your FLAC files in sub-folders of the 'music' folder on the NAS and wait a few minutes.
The music will then appear under the UPnP input in the NAIM app on the Tablet or 'Phone.
Tap an item to play it!
Later you can also use the PC to 'rip' your CDs and put all of them on the NAS as well.
Usually it just all works, but there are plenty of people on here who can give you help if you need it.
Later we can discuss the remote control connection so the Naim app can control the volume on the Nait XS 2, all the control you need in one place!
If you really can't run a network cable from your PC to the HiFi system there are ways around this (primarily using two Apple Airports as a network link), but these options can be discussed later if absolutely needed.
If you don't have the budget for this there are other options but to discuss these we NEED to know what you budget is.
* We can give you some guidance here as well.
