'Best' remote control for NAC282
Posted by: deepinsight on 04 December 2016
I'm looking for a NAIM remote for my NAC282 that does 'what it says on the remote'. i.e. pres the aux1 button to select the aux1 input...
I currently have a Narcom 4 on which you have to remember which number correlates to which input ( and source and record are different! ).
I also have a Narcom 5 which I use for my NDX - again here the input selections don'tr correlate to the inputs available on the NDX.
I can see that by having the same remote for multiple units that there will be a degree of compromise, but I'd like to have a remote that echoes what the (each) unit can do.
Is there such a thing in the Naim stable, or dare I suggest, in the wider world?
If you set up system automation, the NDX/Uniti remote is about as good as any I have used in any system. It has more buttons than the 4 and 5. Very clever and easy to customize and optimize.

How about a Naim Flash remote?
The Naim app with system automation, then you can rename each input however you want, so instead of something meaningless like Aux 2, you could call it what it actually is, such as LP12, for example.
Can I use the Naim app on my 2&2?
Just seen this one that comes with a new CDX2

Yes, if you have an ND5, NDX, or NDS, and set up System Automtion. Key feature -- it is in the ND manual.

This is for AV2 / DVD5, not CDX2. Not as good for OP as NDX/Uniti remote.

Strange. Just seen this on a famous auction site. The whole unit is Just a few months old. Why would it have that remote? Odd.
Sorry, not much help I know!
If you're open to using a third party remote, a Logitech Harmony 1100 touchscreen may be configured to meet your needs...
Because it is specialized to the Naim AV gear, there are many buttons not applicable to stereo pieces. I know, because I have two of them -- one that came with my AV2, and one that an auction seller fobbed off on me, preferring to keep the original remote that came with the NAC, for himself.
I have a Narcom3 and 4, which are essentially the same as the 5. I also have an R-com. NDX/Uniti remote tops them all, but only if you configure the NDX correctly for system automation, which is easy to do, if you follow the manual.
If you did not get an original remote with the NDX, there is no substitute, IMHO. Order one!
The Naim app on iPhone works well, too.

Same here works extremely well input labelling is an added bonus.
Thanks folks, I think I'll stick with the Narcoms and get used to them....

I had forgotten -- this remote is provided with HDX and Uniti Serve, too.

I didn't explicitly mention that the NDX/Uniti remote completely replaces the Narcom -- it does. It is the cheapest "box upgrade" I can think of in the Naim ecosystem.
True even if one was not included with your NDX, as it should have been.
How does it miss the mark relative to your original inqiry?

As mentioned, Harmony remotes are a great option. I don't remember ever using the original Naim remotes on my gear...
The only improvement the Harmony seems to provide is control of components across different brands -- which is valuable, if you need that. If you stay exclusively in the Naim ecosystem, what is the benefit versus the NDX/Uniti remote?

At the risk of sounding pedantic, it's only an optional extra for the US. Never felt the need myself though.
Cheers, Chris.
I think being pedantic on a thread like this is inevitable, my own contributions included -- reading the manual to a friend.
I am sympathetic to questions from others on topics well covered in the manual and by friendly dealers; it took me nearly a year to properly set up my NDX-FM, and fully appreciate the brilliance of the NDX/Uniti remote, in spite of no deficiency of the manual or dealer.
Naim-type owner spirit hurts as much as it helps sometimes.

If you are into streaming you can use your iPad as remote...
I use a Logitech Harmony Ultimate to control my entire system (including an Oppo, AV2, Linn Karik, Amazon Fire TV etc).
It works beautifully in terms of system automation and easy one touch switching from one source to the next....
However... despite all of the customisation, when I'm doing straight 2ch listening through my Nac82 (vinyl, CD, radio) rather than TV based through the Av2, the ability to delicately change volume on the 82 simply eludes the logitech.
For that reason I still keep a Naim remote handy. It only gets used for vol +/-
