New uniti and HDMI

Posted by: Chrissw19 on 04 December 2016

hello,

I've gone through the long thread about the new uniti but couldn't find an answer to that one. Can you connect a blu-ray/sacd  player with HDMI output to the naim HDMI input and use it to play an SACD into one of the new uniti?

Thanks

No, the HDMI input is for ARC (Audio Return Channel) from compatible televisions only. the ARC input on the TV will most likely be input 2, and is usually marked as such. All HDMI devices connect through the TV and sound is then sent back through ARC to the Uniti.

This also means that the TV can power the Uniti on or off or tell the Uniti to change to that input, and adjust volume on the Uniti with the TV remote. Presumably this will all be optional in the Uniti setup menu.

Thanks, that would have been a nice feature!

Then surely connecting the SACD / Blu-Ray player to the TV and the Uniti to the TV through the ARC connector, when you play the SACD, should it not play through the Uniti?

I don't know ... have to say my HDMI knowledge is very limited.

ARC does not support DSD streams.

David, I have checked the HDMI 1.4 spec supporting ARC and I saw no reason why DSD carried as DoP could not be supported. It would appear entirely down to the participating devices.. and admittedly in consumer soundbar  land where these are likely to be used like a 21st century SCART connector I think it's unlikely to be supported with most ARC supporting devices.. but not precluded as far as I can see.
