What component have you smuggled in....

...without your partner realising it's there....

Replacing 282 with 252 - I just told my wife I tidied up some cables and got rid of one power supply (NAPSC was gone....)

There is also a case of a mysterious Headline appearing in my listening rooms.

Cables are easier to hide too....

Cables, most notably a Hi Line miraculously appeared one day ;-)

I did acquire my first NAP 300, some six weeks old, from a chap who had smuggled it into the house, assuming SWMBO wouldn't notice, since it was a straight swap for an existing amp.

However, at the end of the month, when their credit card statement rolled in .............................. oops!

Oops indeed

The old Naim kit was fine. Slowly filled up the Isoblue rack and then add another level... easy.

I did have an n-Sub which wasn't noticed for a few days which i thought was pretty good going...

'Fraid so, though I did wonder, on the drive home, what penance he would have to pay, (and maybe still is, to this day), for making such an error of judgement.

Could be worse - he could have bought DBLs hoping his wife would not notice. A friend of mine once tried this.... a message from his SWAMBO was very clear: 'the coffins go, or I go'

The move from vinyl to CD was good for one thing - that you could sneak the little round things in in your briefcase.

See you then, love!!!!!!

I always think, Honesty is the best policy, so I tell my wife everything that I have purchased,  you just have to pick the right moment, the key is timing... so for me the best time is about 2 minutes after my wife has gone to sleep....

Changed my XS 2 for a Uniti 2. Also added NACA5 and Piwerline. Both of the latter were secondhand purchases so there was not as much guilt.

None. It's a complete give away when you are packing up the old box to ship to the dealer then unpacking the new one. I just fess up and ask for mercy. Maybe an insanity plea might work in future.

I think Dave has found a good way - asking for mercy usually works

Look I've learnt something in life - even if guilty do not concede.   A better strategy is to encourage = indulgence with Mrs Strat as a lead-in.  So in the last year we've had a new kitchen, shower room and downstairs cloakroom before we embarked on the speakers!!!

My wife and I always make a joint decision on new boxes/cables. She has at least as good an ear as me (well she has two fully functioning ones to my  one and a half) and I would not consider buying something she was not happy with.

Bodger, brilliant,  just plead insanity...

I have a different solution:  We live in different houses 500m apart!

I did manage to swap the ND5 XS for a 272 and she didn't notice 'til rather later.  But when she did find out, she was really pleased as that was when as I gave her the ND5 (and a NAS) for her system - I suppose presenting a key component of my system as a gift to her was a bit of a giveaway that I'd done something!

Even though it didn't happen with the 272 (she wasn't available to audition it), as with Nick from Suffolk, we usually make joint decisions on stuff - I value her musical understanding, she values my technical knowledge and we both value the other's opinion and insights.

Never had to smuggle anything. On the contrary, just last week my wife called me a 'whimp' for never upgrading our 15 years old Naim system. She is now insisting on me taking some audiophile counseling..

A 555ps turned up in my porch yesterday. Got rumbled because she got home from work before me

Posted on: 08 December 2016 by james n

I sold my 252 to a guy who wanted it sent to his Neighbours address rather than his own to avoid the wife finding out

It does make me laugh how even 'fully grown men' need to disguise certain hifi related sales from their wives / partners!

I just have a constant flow going in and out these days so she can never tell which is new and which is old!

Nick in Suffolk and Haim will wake up each day from a happy restful sleep. No guarrantees for  the rest of you. As they used to say in my Army days, great initiative, poor judgement.

I found a good way of actually getting new purchases signed off - I start testing and auditioning and of course insist my wife auditions with me. As her attention span is shorter than mine when it comes to all things HIFi , by the 4th iteration she just let's me get on with it, having of course clearly expressed her preference (which most of the time is the same as mine to be honest).
