Airplay problem

Posted by: Zipperheadbanjo on 10 December 2016

Here's a question for the airplay experts on the board.

When I attempt to stream from my phone to my muso, if I bring up control centre to select my airplay destination, I don't see the muso... but I do see an airport express that doesn't exist on my network (it may have existed at one point in the distant past).

However... if I go into my airplay options within a specific app (iTunes for example).. if I play a track and then select airplay from within the app... I do see the option for the muso.

Any suggestions for how I can get the muso to appear within control centre on my phone? I could manage the way it is, but it is a bit of a pain in the butt, and my spouse has a natural tech phobia so expecting to her to remember work arounds for the problem is not likely.

Hi,

By phone you mean iPhone, and which one, 5,6,7 etc?

And which version of IOS?

Then we can take a guess at the cause

iPhone 6 plus... both myself and my wife have one, and the issue is identical on both phones.

We are both on the most recent version of the IOS 10.1.1

Apologies for being a bit dim here - by control centre you mean?

I would expect you to see AirPlay hosts, e.g. your Muso from an AirPlay enabled app, e.g. iTunes, YouTube, etc., but not, say from the Naim App which is DNLA/UPNP enabled...

Hence the 'control centre' question - which app is it?

The non-existent AirPort Express sounds like an old entry in a local DNS server, or local hosts file on your router or pc/Mac/other computer on your network. It should have expired (been automatically deleted), by the sounds of it, ages ago, hence why it might have been saved/hard coded somewhere.

As an aside, is the network cable, WiFi or both? And what router and/or switches are included?

Control center is a summary of some global settings on the phone accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen when you are on the home screen... provides quick access to airplane mode, wifi, bluetooth, airplay, night shift, and some utilities like flashlight, stop watch, calculator and camera. It is intended to provide quick access to key settings.

Within control centre... the muso does not appear as an option within airplay. However I do see an airport express (although I have no airport express on the network and haven't for over 18 months).

Within individual applications I do see muso on my airplay settings (I also see the phantom airport express from within the applications)... but I am seeking to figure out why the muso does not appear within control centre.

Strange, I have a non-Apple (non-Naim ) streamer which is Airplay and it shows up fine in Control Centre on iPhone 6 and iPad. I also have an old Airport Express which I used to have connected for Airplay, and as expected, it is not showing on Control Centre. Maybe you just need to do a full network restart to jolt it into action? Sorry, that's the best suggestion I can come up with just now!

Got it! Control Centre on my iPhone, 7 rather than 6 Plus, shows AirPlay mirroring to my Apple TV, but nothing else, including my AirPort Express used for AirPlay into my SU. I wouldn't expect it to as Control Centre does not appear to offer music playback on its first screen. Swipe left, however, and I get a music playback screen with a wireless icon at the bottom left. Tap the wireless option and I see all my AirPlay options Airport Express and Apple TV.

Does this work for you?

If you still can't see all your AirPlay devices as outlined above, agree with Chrissu, reboot/restart every device on the LAN network would be the starter for ten to purge buffers, tables, etc.

Here's another stab in the dark to try. Open Airport Utility, select the offending AE, and select 'forget'. Probably won't help find your Muso, but at least the non-existent AE won't clog up your Control Centre.

It's times like this which tempt me to trade my SU for a 202/NAPSC to go with my 200 and CD5si and go back to listening to music the old fashioned way - open drawer, remove puck, place CD on spindle, attach puck, close drawer, press play, enjoy!

LOL... I almost never have issues with my main system... upnp through the Naim devices works pretty flawlessly and I wouldn't give up streaming (although I do spin the odd silver disk just for fun).

It's the wireless connectivity stuff and basic networking stuff which tends to befuddle me... supposed to be easy... but there are always lots of mysterious gremlins that pop up requiring far too much time on forums and discussion groups finding the equally obtuse and mysterious cures.

Agreed though... reboot is never a bad idea. I'll play around with the various suggestions... thanks for the feedback!

Yes that works... i still have the rogue airport express but I'll figure that out another time :-)

For your AE connected to your SU.... are you using this as a network extender... or is it creating it's own network?

Tried that... when I open airport utility, the offending mysterious airport express isn't listed. Apparently it only exists in my list of airplay devices.. despite not being on my network.

ZHB, I have successfully used my AE to connect my SU to my wifi network both by joining or extending the network; joining operates as an Ethernet bridge whilst extending operates as an Ethernet repeater. The one option not to use, unless you really know what you're up to is create a new WiFi network.

Simplest is join a wireless network (your existing WiFi network), effectively a cable connection using wireless.

The Airport Utility uses a separate wireless network to see and configure new, unconfigured Airport devices which, if not successfully completed, or a new WiFi network was created, may account for your phantom entry....

Glad its working now.
