Cannot disable Windows Media Sharing in Windows Home Server 2011 - stops AssetNas from working

Posted by: DaveM6 on 10 December 2016

This one is driving me mad! I have a Naim NDX connected to an AssetNAS box (Network Attached Storage) running AssetNAS software. I access the NAS using Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS) which was preinstalled on the AssetNAS box. (I use a Macbook so do this via remote desktop.) So, tonight I was checking one of the folders through WHS and stupidly changed the Media Library Sharing setting for Music to 'On' just to see what would happen! I immediately changed it back to 'Off' and clicked 'Apply', but now I cannot set the AssetNAS software to 'On' in WHS. It keeps going back to 'Off' and the 'Apply' button is greyed out. When I use the Naim app to look at the UPNP folders it shows the AssetNAS as 'AssetNAS: 1: Windows Media Connect'. So it appears that even though I have reset the Media Sharing Library for music back to 'Off' it is running in the background and stopping me from using the AssetNAS software to stream to the Naim NDX. I've tried Googling and looking at various settings in WHS but cannot find a way of sorting this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes it's not obvious: I'll try to remember...

Firstly have you stopped the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (you may need to set it's startup option to disabled)?

Thanks so much for the reply, Huge. Been out so sorry for not replying sooner. I've just gone into WHS/Services and set Windows Media Connect to disabled (I couldn't see Windows Media Player) and restarted the NAS and set AssetNAS to On but no joy. I'm average when it comes to techie, so apologies if I've not done what you suggested! Thanks. Dave

1)   Try:  Go to Dashboard / Server Settings / Media.
Turn it off here.

2)   If that doesn't work, Try:  Go to Networks / Advanced Sharing Settings / Choose media streaming options.
Then next to 'Show devices on' select all networks. Remove all devices that you can.
You'll be left with 'Media programs on this PC and remote connections...'. Select blocked or block all.
Then try (1) again.

N.B. If Asset (or anything related) is in the list in (2) then initially try without blocking that (but I think asset will completely bypass Windows Media and access the file system directly, so you may still have to block it from Windows Media Services and try again).

If these don't work I don't know where to go as that may indicate that you are using a customised version of Windows rather than a generic WHS2011, or that the AssetNAS software is hooking the OS services somewhere.

Sorry, I'm being thick, but I can't seem to find Dashboard or Networks through the 'Start' menu.

On the Server console:

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Dashboard.

Then try this:

Thanks, Huge. I tried this and also came across the link you sent after Googling but can't get to Dashboard.  I'm conscious I am taking up your valuable Sunday time so I will keep trying based on your instructions. I will also contact the company that provided the AssetNAS and see if they can help because, as you said earlier, this may be a non standard version of WHS. Thanks so much for your kind assistance and apologies for taking up your weekend time. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Cheers, Dave.

No worries about time, I'm retired, so I have a full week of 'Sundays' to choose from!

If you don't have access to the Dashboard through either of those routes, then either your WHS has been customised or something is very wrong (TechNet is a very authoritative source of information).  Let's hope it's the former and the supplier can sort it out.  Good luck and best wishes.

Lucky you re retirement (he says enviously!). Here's hoping the supplier can sort it. Thanks again for all your help, much appreciated.

Well, Huge, I'm officially an idiot! It dawned on me this morning that late on Saturday night I had accidentally clicked on an icon that uninstalled Asset upnp - I had immediately cancelled it and seeing that Asset was still in the program list thought nothing of it. Until today when I noticed that Asset wasn't showing a version number in the Settings list in WHS! Repaired the program and now all works. That'll teach me to fiddle with software at silly o'clock in the morning! Thankfully, I didn't contact the supplier and make a total fool of myself with them too.

Thanks again for your help.

Yes, we've all done something similar.

Computers are to b****y complicated*  - and that's from an ex-computer systems designer!

I'm still concerned that you can't access the dashboard though.

* but they're still a lot less complicated and a lot less confusing than people are - and I should know, I have to live with myself!

Good point!
