Just bought Naim Nait 5 whilst drunk, what next?

Posted by: Peter Thompson on 12 December 2016

Well the story goes:

Whilst inebriated, i bought a Naim Nait 5

My logic at the time was to have some small stand-mounted speakers or bookshelf speakers in my small listening room (Pre-acoustically treated, 5m x 5m) so i would be able to proof my own music and enjoy some classical / electro music in my free time

I don't have a CD player and am looking to purchase a used Naim CD player, budget around 400-500 pounds

I don't have speakers yet, budget around 400-800 pounds, used are fine and don't care what they look like

Advice required from the knowledgeable among you is the following:

CD player matching, preferably Naim but not restricted to that manufacturer

Power AMP suggestions, only could consider Naim

Speakers, age not a problem, only mid-range performance is a requirement and with a controlled bass

Am Located in Finland so Naim dealers are restricted and have Finnish prices (Which are outrageous)

Whilst i am fully aware of my annoyingly ambiguous request I sincerely appreciate any feedback on aiding me into my Naim wonderland however i began my journey there.

Yesterday I bought a pair of Guru Juniors, preowned and in mint condition here in Lisbon for less than 500EUR. They're a very good match with my (brand new second hand) UnitiQute 2. That being said those speakers aren't easy to find, so I guess I was lucky. I don't get all the 685 S2s raving reviews. They're OK speakers. I heard (very briefly) both the 685 S2s and CM1 S2s prior to buying my Nait 5si. I don't think either was a particularly good match with the amp. I ended up buying the Focal Aria 906s, which costed my about 730€ at the time.

We bought a £3,000 trailer tent on eBay one night after far too much wine. It's one of the best things we ever bought and we had marvellous holidays in it.

Perhaps more people should choose their systems this way, it's much more fun than asking the same old questions over and over again and then doing what you were going to do in the first place anyway.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, i will let you know what happens next.

With regards to the drunken purchase, wife had xmas office party, i have an endless supply of homebrew with lets call it "differing levels of alcohol content" commonly know in the north east as jungle juice and whilst in my drunken stupor i encaged in an ecommerce bid war, woke up then next day had a look at what i had done and thought could have been worse...... Now i have committed to a Naim roadmap of poverty

This.  You'll buy less hi fi impulsively, more pizza impulsively.

Rudolph is bringing another litre of Macallan 12.  Hang on . . . LP-12 incoming.

Take it from somebody who has a CD5 and an Apollo-R:  get the Apollo-R.  It's on par with the CD5 in terms of sound quality.  It'll have more remaining life, greater likelihood of being fixable if something breaks, and the digital output (which the CD5 lacks) gives you the option of upgrading by adding a DAC later on.

I like Joerand's advice, stay drunk and all will be well

I once put in a bunch of stock orders while drunk. I didn't even remember it until I started getting a bunch of trade confirmations showing up in my inbox. I subsequently made my password REALLY hard to type.

You already have a bunch of great ideas, not much I can add other than I tried B&W 685's with my 5i one time. I didn't like it. It sounded dull, like it was too big a load for the amp. Ditto the ATC SCM11, wonderful speaker when driven properly, but it too sounded dull and underdriven on the 5i. I then tried the 5i with a pair of Epos M15 speakers I had in another room and that was a great match, so I left that setup alone and still enjoy it. Other Epos speakers may be as good a fit also. I think the 12i is much the same speaker as the 15, so that should be a good match. I haven't tried the newer K series, so I can't comment there.

Another thought, considering you are in Finland is Amphion. The Argon might be a killer match, but I haven't paired that with Naim, so I couldn't say for sure if the 5 could drive it properly. My little Heliums, however, work a treat with my 5i. Small speakers, but what they lack in low bass they make up for with imaging, agility and a riveting performance with small percussion. Very fun setup to listen to, especially nearfield. I would expect you have some Amphion dealers nearby in Finland, so maybe bring your 5 over and have a listen to some Amphions. Bring some beers with you

Update: Bought some Neat Motive SE2's for 600 euros, seems like a good deal, sound pretty sweet, also bought a cd 3.5, very happy with my purchases so far, still looking for a Flatcap for 3.5, search continues, thanks for the help everyone

Your updates are appreciated.

You know what? I've bought a Nait 5 too. Wasn't drunk though. Its the lowest price point where you can step into the Naim world.

It's acting only as a PowerAmp driving 2 B&W CM5's for AV purposes currently. Later on, I'll move it to my work / study room, have it serviced and probably flatcapped. TT connected then.

Which speaker cable are you using? I'm investigating this currently and would love to see experiences. I have NacA5, Tellurium Q Blue and Linn K20 on the radar currently. For different reasons.

Peter,

The 3.5 is a great little player and it makes a good synergy with the more polite Nait 5 (mine id teamed with a Nait 3). If you get an olive Flatcap it should be used with the Nait where it makes a much bigger improvement to the sound.  A newer model will enable you to connect it to the two components at the same time.
