This forum is baaaaaaad - upgrade itch 200 < 250DR

Posted by: arf005 on 12 December 2016

Due to being bored at work and browsing this 'ere forum I have an itch.......

......I scratched said itch and sent a mail to friendly local dealer in Montrose......

Response as follows:

Hi Ali

Yes you can borrow a 250DR, it is £3700.00, it will cost approx. £2800.00 to change.

Kind regards

Robbie

So, do I pursue this further.........or spend similar amount of sponduleggs on a LG 65" OLED TV I have been itching after too!!??!!??

ho hummm - I feel very lucky to have such a conundrum by the way.......and yes, this may be a pointless post as it is not your money I will be spending or my better half you have to convince.....lol

Current set up in my profile but briefly - CDX2 XPS2 202 200 NAPSC & latest addition of HICAPDR feeding B&W N805S's........note the mention of the green blob on current telly, hence the OLED....

Original system, CDX2 202 200 was bought new in 2007, XPS2 second had from a friend and made the CDX2 sweeter......but biggest upgrade by far came from the HICAP DR - total WOW factor, like a whole new level and upgrade of every source (there's a QUTE in there too now).

I seriously can't justify the financial outlay versus gains to go to 282.

If I do "borrow" a 250DR, will I really be able to give it back......

If I do "borrow" a 250DR what am I likely to hear......

If I do "borrow" a 250DR is the discount reasonable for my 200......

If I don't "borrow" a 250DR will this itch ever go away.......

If I don't "borrow" anything is my system due a service any time soon.......

I've just worked three weeks here and got a bonus this year too.........and as usual I am trying to justify this to myself and any savings is burning a hole in me pocket........

arg

Cheers,

Ali

You'd be much better swapping the 202 for a used 282. Or DRing the XPS. Or keeping the savings in the bank for a rainy day. It sounds as though this is something of a spur of the moment thing, and they never tend to work out well.

I'd give OLED another couple of years to settle down and go for some proven audio technology!

Posted on: 12 December 2016 by Finkfan

Naim prices will go up, OLED Tv prices will come down.

Have fun!

Thanks for the level headed advice chaps!

Get the telly.

Ali,

I have the same local dealer and had a 202/200 when I had a demo of the 250DR

... no contest, hear it and you'll keep it.

Must disagree with HH, the 250DR is the way to go ... I am very happy with this back-ending my 202.

HH is quite correct about spur of the moment purchases though ... but I know where you're coming from.

... and I think the trade-in for the 200 is good ... I think mine was a little older and I've kept my 200 to pass on to son for Xmas.

Hi 202+latest Hicap DR is massive upgrade.A magical combo. Works a treat and makes 202 really sing!

I were you I'd do 250DR now  ,suspect you'll be astonished to find it a terrific experience the shift , especially as the nap200 is the first suspect to be recapped. I've had twice,a  13 years old one and a 2011 unit and they didn't perform the same.

Don't go  282 now, but later.

A 250DR is £3600.00, according to the 2016 price list, 3680 if bought next January. Perhaps he should be able to charge you £2700 ?

Option 1:  regain your sanity, save the money, enjoy your music, and stay off this forum a few months.

Option 2:  reply to your dealer and ask for a quote on trading your 202 for a 282.  Then do a home demo, separately, of 282/HC/200,  then 202/HC/250DR.  Then make informed decision.

Caution:  Do NOT demo 282/HC/250DR!

Right unless "you don't care for music do you" forget the TV.

I have the same itch..£900 trade in for a 2007 nap200 seems good, I had £800 in mind and mines a 2009 model. As for convincing the other half, mine wouldn't notice given the identical fascia. I'll resist a little longer though, I accidentally* 'won' a witch hat power amp on an auction site which is meant to better a 250 - and I soon had the 200 back in situ.

*Put in a bid after Christmas drinks..

It seems that Billy Vee are giving away a free SuperLumina din to XLR with a 250, so even if you don't want it and sell it for £1,000, that's a big saving and you can still sell the 200 privately.

Posted on: 12 December 2016 by ChrisSU

That looks like a decent trade-in price for your 200, but that's because it's against a 250DR at full retail price. Given that you already have a Hicap, a cheaper upgrade would be to look out for a decent used 282 and sell your 202.

Why be sensible, when it comes to spending other peoples money........only joking.

I would suggest leave the TV, in a few months the price will be considerably reduced, they don't hold their money and they are constantly being replaced with latest hi-def, 4k, 3D whatever ect ect...

The 250dr will go up in price in new year, so it's a good time to do a deal, your dealer may well allow a little more of a reduction, it's always worth asking the question.

No doubt in the course of time the 'itch' will return ...so xps can be dred or 282 bought,  either would be your natural upgrade path.

Keep us updated...

How does one get that deal, I looked but couldn't see it.

Don't think  they give out any SL, maybe powerline with power amps and hi-line with sources if still appliable.

Posted on: 12 December 2016 by hungryhalibut

I imagine you'd ring them up. It may just be for people on their mailing list, but there's only one way to be sure. It would be a nice one for you though, wouldn't it? Perfect in fact.

If you read the small print............it's only for people with green hair, red eyes, webbed feet, and bandy legs....so unfortunately apart from myself no one else qualifies .....

Ah!  So it seems we share the same genetic disorders then!

(But it seems they didn't know about me as I didn't get a letter.)

My better half's response to "I have an itch....." was "......put some cream on it."

Posted on: 12 December 2016 by Noogle

If you really want to go the "full mullet", why not buy a s/h NAP300 which wouldn't cost significantly more than your 250DR deal?  There are lots about. Then you can get this upgraded to DR spec at a later date as funds allow.

But back in the sane world, a second-hand 282 is obviously the way to go.

OLED technology is right at the top of its price curve at the moment, so it'd be nuts to buy an OLED TV.

Yes, the forum can be bad at times. :-)

I recall having asked an innocent question earlier this year without any intention of a new purchase. The question was about whether there are any plans for an ultimate integrated amp from Naim, an integrated that may be even better than the Supernait 2. In the end, I ended up with a whole stack of boxes - NAC 282, NAP 250 DR and Hicap DR. All unplanned purchases really.

I decided that I wanted to get off the merry-go-round once and for all, and for this reason I bought all of the stuff brand new. I am quite positive I won't be upgrading the new Naim boxes as I have paid retail prices for them.  I have faith in the higher level Naim gear as I have derived great enjoyment from my NAC 202, NAP 200, NAPSC and PSU from Israel, all bought used about 6 or 7 years ago. The move had paid off as the new boxes have lived up to the expectations.

Some good suggestions to stay off the forum for a while until you are "ready".

Posted on: 13 December 2016 by badlands

Look for a nearly new 300 DR, then worry about the other stuff once you have the ultimate amp.

I can just imagine what the 805's would sound like on the end of a 300, even with the 202!

I've just jumped pretty much straight to the end of the upgrade path...

From the poweramp section (only) of a Nati XS 2 -> NAP 300DR, bought s/h (as a DR upgraded and serviced NAP 300 for £4k).  So sorry, that one's gone.
