This forum is baaaaaaad - upgrade itch 200 < 250DR

Posted by: arf005 on 12 December 2016

Due to being bored at work and browsing this 'ere forum I have an itch.......

......I scratched said itch and sent a mail to friendly local dealer in Montrose......

Response as follows:

Hi Ali

Yes you can borrow a 250DR, it is £3700.00, it will cost approx. £2800.00 to change.

Kind regards

Robbie

So, do I pursue this further.........or spend similar amount of sponduleggs on a LG 65" OLED TV I have been itching after too!!??!!??

ho hummm - I feel very lucky to have such a conundrum by the way.......and yes, this may be a pointless post as it is not your money I will be spending or my better half you have to convince.....lol

Current set up in my profile but briefly - CDX2 XPS2 202 200 NAPSC & latest addition of HICAPDR feeding B&W N805S's........note the mention of the green blob on current telly, hence the OLED....

Original system, CDX2 202 200 was bought new in 2007, XPS2 second had from a friend and made the CDX2 sweeter......but biggest upgrade by far came from the HICAP DR - total WOW factor, like a whole new level and upgrade of every source (there's a QUTE in there too now).

I seriously can't justify the financial outlay versus gains to go to 282.

If I do "borrow" a 250DR, will I really be able to give it back......

If I do "borrow" a 250DR what am I likely to hear......

If I do "borrow" a 250DR is the discount reasonable for my 200......

If I don't "borrow" a 250DR will this itch ever go away.......

If I don't "borrow" anything is my system due a service any time soon.......

I've just worked three weeks here and got a bonus this year too.........and as usual I am trying to justify this to myself and any savings is burning a hole in me pocket........

arg

Cheers,

Ali

OLED technology is right at the top of its price curve at the moment, so it'd be nuts to buy an OLED TV.

Not if you wanted the best TV picture.

I'd prefer for the best to get better and cheaper. I'm reading accounts of motion judder and image issues with low lit scenes and a number of the first generation LG sets seem to be cropping up on a certain auction site. I have  one of the last Panasonic top of the range plasma screens moving  from an old but excellent Pioneer Kuro. The Panny will last me until OLED really takes off. Whatever you have it's worth paying to have the screen professionally calibrated - worth every penny. This and a decent Bluray player (Oppo 105D) is more than enough for me and I have more room in the lounge with those centre, surround, rear and subwoofer speakers all sold onIf I want the full Monty I go to the local picture house...and take earplugs!!!

I too have a pana screen. 42gt50. Great Tv and like [@mention:43803620640512181] it will last me till I'm ready to change up to OLED. I'm using a pioneer bluray player. Have you had your screen calibrated then  [@mention:43803620640512181]? Who by and how much did it cost? I'll seriously consider it for my next screen.

I also have one of the last Panasonic plasma screens (P50 VT65B). I did my own calibration using the instructions on this site:

I don't have any experience of professional calibration, but I did mine 2 years ago with very pleasing results, and it still looks good enough for most visitors to make very positive comments re quality of display. I have absolutely no plans, or desire, to 'upgrade'(?) to OLED.

I have a VT screen and had it calibrated from new by Greyscale Solutions (there are others on the web). My chap traveled from Brighton and was covering Surrey and Sussex. He was with me for almost 3 hours accessing all sorts of hidden menus and going much further than a set up disc. As I recall I paid around £230 and the result was perfect blacks and excellent skin tones. I'll certainly have it done when I get the next set - OLED or otherwise.

For the sake of disclosure.

I had my last generation Panasonic Plasma stolen from my home in France. It had the second best picture that I had ever seen - losing out marginally against a Kuro. I then bought my current LG OLED as a replacement. The picture is better. I was unable to find someone to do a calibration and used - via service menu - recomended settings from another forum. You don't need to worry about blacks with OLED so it is only really about getting skin tones right.

When my second screen - previous gen Pioneer - dies it will be replaced by an OLED.
