Sorting Albums Within Naim App
Posted by: Bryce Curdy on 13 December 2016
Windows 10/dBpoweramp/Asset uPnP/QNAP/UniteQute2/iPadPro
I generally prefer the Album / Artist display but I have 3 main issues:
Firstly for compilations I would generally prefer for the album to be displayed once under its title rather than for it to feature under every artist that has a track on the compilation. Changing Album Artist doesn't seem to help. I can change the Artist to the name of the album but ideally I would like each track to display the artist. Is the only way of achieving this to edit each track name so that the composer is part of the track name?
Is there a way of displaying multiple albums by a single artist in a non-alphabetical sequence, chronologically for example?
I have a number of CD singles for various artists. Could I put these in a subfolder called 'Singles' for each artist so that the subfolder would appear beside the albums?
Thanks for any help. I did spend a while looking to see if these questions had been covered elsewhere but no joy.

If you take a compilation like the one below it shows up once as an album under 'album' but multiple times under 'artist/album' and I don't think you can fix that.

To be able to sort by year you have to add the date criterion to the browse tree in the appropriate place. I have never tried it as I like (and need) to keep things simple.
As to putting the singles in a folder I don't think you can, but might be wrong.

Are you wedded to Asset? I've managed pretty much the things you're after in Minimserver, but don't know how to do so with Asset.
Edit: To be more specific, I've got compilations working roughly as you mention, and have albums sorted by artist and then date when viewing the list of all albums. The singles thing and viewing per artist by date I'm not sure about, but am fairly sure it could be done with minim.

Rather than using Artist / Album I use Album Artist / Album. That means I've had to put some effort into completing that field, but I get all my compilations as whole albums under Various Artists. R5 (as I mentioned earlier) now properly displays the track artists as well as title in the Naim app (as on HH's picture above).

Re the 'Singles' query you could do this but you will need to set up a folder view in your Asset configuration as Asset normally uses metadata for its browser views.

That's to all.
Only just spotted Album Artist / Album in Advanced Search. I assume there's no way you can customise the app so that it appears on the main screen?
HH - how do I add the date criterion to the browse tree?
SJBABBEY - how do I do that then?

You just need to edit the browse tree, and add date after wherever you want it. You'll need to fiddle about until you get it right. I can't be more helpful I'm afraid.

Don't know where to find the browse tree he says rather stupidly.

What I suggest is that you browse to your nas from your iPad. Then go to Asset. Save this to your iPad home screen using the little box with the arrow pointing out of it. Then, when you want to fiddle with Asset you can do it from the pad. It's much easier. The browse tree looks like this... There will be some trial and error to get it right!!

Ok HH, let's do this one step at a time. How do you browse to your NAS from your iPad? I'm Windows 10 rather than iOS for my laptop.

Using your PC you log into your QNAP server (use QFinder Pro to open the QNAP's login screen in your web browser). Click on the red Asset icon which will open a new web tab and click on the "Configure" link. At the bottom of the configuration page you will see the "Edit Browse Tree" link. Click this link to open the browsing options page in which you will be able to add the "Folders & Filename browsing" option.

Using the web browser on your iPad, you can log into your QNAP NAS by typing in its network address e.g. 192.168.1.XXX which will bring up the login screen.

Regarding the singles. I tried to move two four track CD singles into a separate folder. It's worked up to a point but has all eight tracks (2 different singles) listed as 1-8 with 4 of them with the wrong artwork. I was hoping for sub folders with the right art work. Starting to think the most elegant solution would be to create an artist called rem (or whoever) singles???

You may need to have a subfolder for each of the different singles OR you could add a track number to the titles (e.g. 1 to 4 for the first single then 5 to 8 etc). Asset will pick up the artwork from the folder.jpg file in the folder so if there is just one folder it's probably assigned the artwork from the first folder.jpg file it has found. You could try embedding the artwork into the audio file metadata to see if that works.
It may also be worthwhile getting Asset to do a rescan as well.

SJBABBEY how do i work out what xxx will be?

You should be able to log into your router to check the list of devices on your network and their network addresses.
Also, if you use QFinder Pro to open the NAS on your PC, the network address will appear in the site address at the top of the web browser i.e. where the forums.naimaudio.com address appears on this page.

Within the Browse Tree that HH has pointed you to you can move the items up and down the order to suit your own preference. I've moved Album Artist / Album to the top and Artist / Album to the bottom.
I went through and completed the Album Artist Field for ALL my albums - I'm not sure what happens if that field / tag isn't filled in.
As for the singles, you can complete the tags for Album then group them all in a single folder. I did mine within iTunes and called it Gavin's Single (imaginative, eh). You might need to mess around with track numbers if you're particular about the order within that 'album'.

I should also add that I complete the Sort fields (for Artist and Album Artist) too, putting Dylan, Bob in so that he appears under D and not B.
