Music on Special Offer Thread?

Posted by: sjt on 14 December 2016

I am wondering if it would be legit to have a thread in here dedicated to music album downloads from legitimate retailers that are currently on special offer.

As an example I was just looking through the what are you listening to mega thread just now and came across the Melody Gardot record because someone was listening to it. I have wanted this for a while but it was always expensive (about 20 quid). On a whim I went over to a place I usually go to buy music downloads and by a blind stroke of luck it was on special offer at just over half price. Deluxe edition is cheaper than the standard edition! I bought it straight away.

So I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to posting albums that are on special offer at the moment with not-so-subtle hints as to where you could get them from, when the offer expires and how much is knocked off etc, so people could see instantly anything that was on special. It would certainly be a thread I would come back to often.

I did a search and couldn't find anything like this in the forum, but usually the searches on these forums are rubbish so this is not a guarantee!

There might need to be a few rules, e.g. the poster has no affiliation with the seller, only legitimate download shops / sites etc.

Just a thought still in the half-bakery...

I set up a UK account for Helen using her email address. You don't need another person really, just a different email address. I've had my old French account for donkey's years. Qobuz always defaults to it but I can log out. Or enter the site using a browser (Firefox in my case) with no cache and no history. I use this "clean" version of FF for some of my work.

I see Qobuz have a Stax label sale, which was around last year, when I picked up this little Albert King gem http://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/alb...g/0088807233716#item

Some wonderful stuff here all for less than a fiver.

Not really a special offer. But at the www.jpc.de you can buy the complete works of JS Bach for keyboard performed by Andres Schiff on the Decca label for only EUR 24,99. These are 12 CD’s. A real bargain if you ask me. I just order it. Shipping cost to the Netherlands was only 3 euro’s.

Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Tim Story - Inlandish

This charming piano and electronics album from 2008 is mysteriously only £1.99 on Qobuz. Ignore the "Lunz" tag - it's wrong.

Gary, well spotted this is a lovely album at a lovely price. Some interesting stuff on Gronland records - I already have some Sol Seppy and Half Cousin plus the obligatory Neu.

Also, I have most of the Roedelius stuff and related projects but if I didn't the 31 track 'Works 1968-2005' would be an essential purchase:

Wow, even with Sublime discount a wee bit pricey for me! There exists a psychological barrier of £10 through which I can't ever imagine breaking.

You realise that’s the first eight albums? At Sublime rates that’s a fraction over £2 per album!

I'm on it!!!!

(No, I truly didn't spot that - cheers).

Any indication whether the hi-res is significantly better than the CD quality? I've been meaning to get some early Sabs and this represents the ideal opportunity. The 2009 remaster CDs are £8+ each (from Amazon).

I did a quick comparison of the downloaded version to a couple of tracks from a  WAV ripped CD version of Paranoid, looking at the CD I think it's a 1996 issue. The CD was at a higher volume level,  so I had to adjust volume to get a fair comparison. There was some greater clarity and high frequency detail on the hires download, at this price it's a steal.

Eoink, couldn't that be down to the difference between the master used on the 1996 CD versus the 2009 remaster, as opposed to being anything to do with resolution?

Either way, I figured that since it amounts to about 50p difference per album, I'd just go for the high res version anyway.  Even as a casual Sabbath listener at best, it's still pretty tremendous value.

It certainly could be that Dave, that's why I went to check the CD date to give people the background. I don't have any other CDs to compare, most of my Sabbath is on vinyl, but thought I'd share what I had heard as some input.

I’ve not done a thorough comparison, but I’ve just compared two tracks.

Paranoid: the 2009 CD rip is slightly louder, but with volume adjusted has slightly more bottom end and general thwack, and the HD has more air and detail.

Supernaut: the HD is at the same level as the 2009 CD rip and trounces it in every possible way.

Thanks for that Gary I've been flipping a coin as to whether or not to purchase yet another version and go for the HD, so I'll go and click that buy button.
