Music on Special Offer Thread?
Posted by: sjt on 14 December 2016
I am wondering if it would be legit to have a thread in here dedicated to music album downloads from legitimate retailers that are currently on special offer.
As an example I was just looking through the what are you listening to mega thread just now and came across the Melody Gardot record because someone was listening to it. I have wanted this for a while but it was always expensive (about 20 quid). On a whim I went over to a place I usually go to buy music downloads and by a blind stroke of luck it was on special offer at just over half price. Deluxe edition is cheaper than the standard edition! I bought it straight away.
So I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to posting albums that are on special offer at the moment with not-so-subtle hints as to where you could get them from, when the offer expires and how much is knocked off etc, so people could see instantly anything that was on special. It would certainly be a thread I would come back to often.
I did a search and couldn't find anything like this in the forum, but usually the searches on these forums are rubbish so this is not a guarantee!
There might need to be a few rules, e.g. the poster has no affiliation with the seller, only legitimate download shops / sites etc.
Just a thought still in the half-bakery...

Thanks SJT, 23GB ofLLou winging its way over the Internet to me now.
Ordered, thank you! IIRC Qobuz can be a bit troublesome with larger downloads; I have distant memories of having to download one of the big Dylan Bootleg Series track by track, so if anybody has recent positive experience getting the Lou box it would be reassuring.
My Lou Reed download has just failed about 3GB in. I'm going out soon, so I'll try again when I get back this evening, maybe album by album if I can get it to do that.
I did it a track at a time.
I'd pay £23 for that - if I hadn't bought it already.
Thanks for the tip SJT. I'm going to spend some time going through the offers this morning.
Thanks for that, Eoink. Given the bulk, and the faff of tagging and transferring 17 CDs of music in one go, I think downloading an album at a time track-by-track (I don’t think you can download a single album in one go) just before i’m ready to listen to it might be the way to go.
It’s been mentioned upthread from Qobuz but it wasn’t this cheap...7Digital are selling Black Sabbath’s “The Ten Year War” - their first eight albums, remember - at 24/96 for £10.99.
Gosh, that is cheap. I went for the Qobuz offer, but that's even better. Nice spot.
Nice one. Thank you. Downloading now.

Glad it did some good!
I just got the Roger Waters one and downloaded it all with the Qobuz desktop application. Seemed to work fine.

Great spot! I just bought it. It seems that the silly season for prices is upon us again, and hopefully there will be more. I remember the great times about a year ago with Lou Reed and Maria Callas. Happy daze...

Thanks for this. I have a passing interest in Black Sabbath (owning a couple of the early albums) so I kicked off what the critics say is the worst of this bunch - Never Say Die! and I must say I quite like it and at £10.99 for ten albums at 24/96 well it would be rude not to indulge.

This one seems to be wrongly priced though, IDA Sand - Meet Me Around Midnight for only £0.80!

I'd buy it if I didn't have it already!
Thank you Tricky for this - having just downloaded the Black Sabbath batch, Ida Sand is a world away but thats the joy of music.

An odd one!
As part of a generally uninspiring Box Set Promo Qobuz are listing Roger Waters Album Collection as a six disc set: Pros And Cons, Radio KAOS, Amused To Death, Ca Ira, and some live thing (I'm not a fan) for £11.49. Which, if you like the miserable old whatsit seems good.

The oddity is that it's advertised as being available on July 24, 2025!
I see again the two Callas Boxes at great prices. Can anybody enlighten me on the audiophile quality of those boxes as I am not a die hard opera fan and normally end up with the collectors of the best arias etc....
I’ve got the studio recordings box, which I bought when it was mispriced at £7 last year. It’s very good and sounds good too, but if you are not an opera fan I wouldn’t spend £90 on it.
Thanks for the heads up on the Primephonic Christmas download.
Having completed the purchase and selected Download, I opted for the 'We'll send you an email when your download is ready' option. Any suggestions on how long this 'preparing your download' phase takes? No email after getting on for 2 hours so far - Is this typical?

I chose to wait for the zip file to be created. I think that took less than one minute.
Now downloaded thanks. I have checked the meta data and transferred to my Unitiserve. The problem now is that when I select the UPNP input, it shows all my albums, but this album appears as a list of individual tracks rather than an album. I suspect it’s a metadata issue, but can’t see anything obviously amiss.
Suggestions welcome please!

That usually happens when the track artist is different on each or some tracks. If you change them to a generic track artist such as xmas 17 for example it should show as one album. Not ideal I know but it should work.

I also chose to wait and the zip file was created quickly. However when I try to download onto my iMac (running OSX High Sierra) I get - 'This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it'.
Tried getting the downloader for MAC but that just shows a blank screen when you click on it.
Absolute nightmare but as it's free I think I'll just forget it. I won't be using Primephonic in the future however.

Change the album artist to be the same eg “Various”. Leave track artist as is to give info.

CAMLAN, R.K - thanks for your responses. I already had the Album Artist for all tracks set to Various, and have used Meta Datics to edit the Track Artist to be the same. Obviously this loses some detail, but I see that as a fair trade-off for getting the whole album together.
For those of you who, like me, like their electronic music in a Berlin style, the label Syngate has a 20% discount offer on their Bandcamp site, code: sgxmas2017
It's valid until Christmas Eve.
