Theft update and an apology

Posted by: Cheekymonkey71 on 14 December 2016

Well, I'm pleased to advise that I had confirmation that my complete system will be replaced with brand new components which i expect will arrive after Christmas. I'll be getting the DR versions of the hicap and the 250 too, so all in all I'm pleased given the circumstances.

I have to apologise to those who were expecting frantic pre Christmas debate on which way I should go with my kit however, as it's all being replaced like for like...so my new / old system will look like this:

Gyro SE, RB303 2m black

NDX

282

250DR

HICap DR

out of interest and to give you all something to advise me on, how much of an uplift in performance do you think I can expect over my old version (non DR) version of this system. I guess this will be an interesting thread topic in itself!

Thanks again to all who offered help and advice previously, have a great, music filled Christmas

The 250DR was a profound improvement in my system, mac, DAC, 555PSDR, 282, SC.  Much quieter background, instruments and voices more separated and more convincing.  A more "organic" sound - just sounds "prettier."  I never noticed the mildly gritty, electronic sound of my 250 until it was gone.  The DR version does a better "disappearing act," so sounds more convincingly like music than hifi amplifier.  You will like it.

Every cloud indeed...Enjoy!

Clearly your insurance company experience was better than mine. Congrats on getting it all sorted. Though I know it is still far more preferable to not have had your space violated in such a horrid way.

The above will be fantastic. Apart from the speakers, that is the same system I started with in one big go a few years ago (sans DR on the 250). I'm probably the only person who did have some minor foibles regarding the 250DR - but these are largely an issue of system balance. It is a much more capable amp and less frequency restricted at the lower end. I did find if your speakers were chosen to work with that, the change to the DR could lose some punch. But there is no reason to suspect that will be the case until you try it. When I changed speakers to somethine more capable I got the full benefit of the 250DR and more punch than I could shake a stick at and was suitably impressed.

Really pleased that you are sorted and your insurance company has paid up in full...enjoy your new system.

Delighted for you! Good to hear that all losses have been covered by the insurance company, and the DR upgrades are going to be a definitive added bonus.

Excellent - glad it got sorted out quickly.

250DR - a different animal altogether expect to be properly blown away omce it warms up.

Now you can start planning for that XPS DR you've always been promissing yourself.

Good insurance company, looks as though you will be having a good Christmas. Your system is very similar to mine and I found the DR upgrade made a real difference, for me the lower noise threshold and clarity on vocals both improved. As a matter of interest....what phono amp do you use?

I hope you enjoy your brand new system and I'm certain it will help you forget that dreadful incident.

Hi john

they me will be sending me a new Graham Slee Era Gold V. I'm thinking that arm / phono stage will come under scrutiny fairly soon...

Nice. I'm using the Gram Amp 2 whichI think is excellent at the price point. However when I changed the arm to an SME (which I really like) the dealer felt I should upgrade the phono amp, maybe to a valve model, so I'm going to have a listen in the new year I think. In the interim - enjoy the new system!

If you were already considering changes to your system, now would be a good time to do it. Once the insurance company is out of the way, I imagine your dealer would be happy to give you a credit for an item against the purchase of something else. (e.g. 252 for 282)

Not that you really need to change much, I'm sure you'll enjoy the new kit as it is with the DR upgrades.

That is an extremely swift result. If it's not breaking forum rules, which insurance company is it? My insurance is due very soon and I'm just getting quotes right now - and it is shocking how much premiums have risen in the past few years!

Congratulations and at least you have the bonus of DR'd kit which will hopefully partially make up for all the upset.

Regarding the uplift from a DR'd 250, wot CHARLIEP said. I couldn't have put it better.

Happy to share the name of our insurance company if ok with the forum managers. Perhaps Richard could advise? I'm not sure that there's an option for me to DM you otherwise.

I had a similar experience when I had my kit take a lightning strike down the telephone line earlier in the year - note to ones self; when disconnecting your kit during a storm also disconnect any Ethernet cables as well!!!

I use that insurance company that favours the brave and the bold and have to say the experience was flawlessly professional. No if's but's or can not's just we are sorry to hear you have a problem, do what you need to do and send us the bills.

Congratulations on a swift and good result.

Would be good to know the insurance company.

Regards,

Nick

Nice to know that in system terms you will come out of this well.

Chubb?

Too subtle? I believe their name starts with an H and ends in an X but there are other well know insurance companies too choose from!

We used Hiscox once but when we looked at them recently they'd got very expensive compared to others. Of course, a cheap insurer is great, but if they won't pay out, not so great.

I still don't get the brave and bold, though other references come to mind...

Funnily enough I had a quote from them only a couple of days ago, having heard praise of them earlier this year on this forum, to find they are about £40 more than my present insurer (M&S)'s very steep (compared to only 4 or 5 years ago) £730 (buildings & contents), with a minimum excess of £250 vs present £50 (though M&S no longer offer that low XS to new applicants. JL, also mentioned in an earlier thread, come out a lot less (around £430), but with less clarity to the detail so I need to contact them to be able to know if the cover is what I want.

But of course, efficient and effective claim settlement is vitally important, and not clear enough in comparative surveys I have seen like Which?, which is where experiences of people with similar abnormally high value gear are very useful.

Did you have receipts to prove ownership, or what proof did they accept?

Well as nobody has said any different we are insured with Aviva and can't fault them through all of this. I've sent a combination of receipts and photos of boxes / the kit etc and nothing has been queried by them. Very good all in all. The only thing I could be potentially disappointed about is that I might not be getting a dealer install of the new kit (something I'd expect if I personally was spending thick end of £17k in a dealers), they are currently in discussion with the appointed supplying dealer on this I understand. I realise I can't complain really.

Isn't any dealer who supplies Naim equipment expected to install new equipment? And why isn't the dealer supplying the equipment one you would normally use?

Posted on: 16 December 2016 by Cheekymonkey71

The insurance company has procured the equipment through a well-known nationwide Naim dealer, unfortunately I have not been able to express a preference as to who supplies it. I have had kit from their former Worcester shop before and have always found their service to be excellent, so I’m hoping that this is a formality that the insurance company simply isn't aware of.
