Naim app 5.0
Posted by: Dave Smart on 16 December 2016
now on iOS App Store delete old app and download from store, you get version 5.0.
After an initial issue, mine appears to be working totally glitch free.
The initial issue being that on my iPhone, I had to delete the app and reinstall it before my multi-rooms would appear. It seemed stuck on my SuperUniti with no way to change to the Mu-So QB's.

PS: Ah... now i see in the sticky that "Owners of other Naim hard disk servers will still need to use the n-Serve control ap"
I assume UnitiServe/SSD falls int the category of "... other Naim hard disk servers"?? so does this mean this new app (5.0) is not really designed for old servers such as UnitiServe/SSD??? I have been using the Naim app all the while and NOT n-Serve.
Ken, The Core that replaces the Unitiserve is controlled by the Naim app, and needs the new version 5. The Unitiserve will still need N-Serve, with the Naim app for separate control of the streamer. So nothing changes for you, and you didn't need the app update.

Thanks ChrisSU -- i had concluded that this new app is also designed to do the sort of things that 4.9 used to do for control of my NDS, so that there would be no need to maintain 2 separate applications?
If i really should be using 4.9 with my US, (please someone confirm!) then i now need to figure out how to get back to 4.9. In AppStore -- i can only see 5.0 of the app.

Hi Ken,
The current problems are known to the Naim software development team. A post of mine on Sunday re. this update on this thread & in the Beta testers forum, which was more detailed & less than complimentary on the process undertaken with this release, particular towards those with existing products, was picked up by Trevor Wilson & escalated to the team. The Head of R&D, Mark, then responded on Sunday afternoon with reassurance that reviews & actions regarding the issues experienced would be undertaken first thing Monday morning.
i think the issues have been manifested during the desire to consolidate the functionality of two former applications into one for the new product range, namely n-Serve & n-Stream (which had already become the Naim app) which is a big task. As such instabilities have been introduced, which QA process have not yet driven out, and of course the market requirement to get software out to support product launch is hugely demanding. It is just a shame that us as users of only existing products, have been caught up in the live QA cycle, as issues are been shaken out.
I trust they will be resolved, in time with release iterations.

Hi Ken,
I think you are confusing the functionality of two different apps. Like me, you have a UnitiServe and this needs the nServe app to access the music on it for editing duties or for local playback control if you are using the digital output on it. Most of these things can also be done via DTC.
However, like me, you are using an NDS as your renderer (player) and therefore do not use nServe for playback duties; this is the function of the Naim app, which as you know has just been updated to version 5.
Version 5 is designed to control existing renderers (NDS etc.) as well as the new platform Uniti products but not the UnitiServe, which runs on a different server platform.
So, you still need both apps (nServe and Naim app), one to access your UnitiServe and the other to control your NDS.
Unfortunately, the update to the Naim app to enable it to be used with the new products, has caused some functionality issues with existing renderers and it will no doubt take Naim's development team some time to sort.
Unfortunately, it isn't possible to revert to the previous version of the app as far as I know; as has been Naim's policy for some time, they only make the latest version available on the App Store.
If it helps, I found that telling the NDS to 'stay connected' (in the settings menu, other settings) has helped keep things more stable and seems to ensure artwork displays properly.
If you need anything else, shout up and I will try and help.
Cheers,
Ian

Looks like there's a version update due imminently: https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...m-app-ios-update-5-1
Hope this remedies the issues, the Naim app can't seem find my UPnP server at all now, despite reboots & reinstalls of EVERYTHING this morning. Sigh. I'm off to listen to podcasts via Bluetooth
Thats fast! Well done Naim and happy Xmass!

John, I deleted and re-installed the app a number of times before my post. Unfortunately, it made no difference. I will see whether restarting the router works, but getting family agreement to do this is proving difficult !
The one time I got "No rooms found" while testing the beta, I selected "find my rooms" on the same page and they all instantly sprang into view.
But failing that, restarting your router will definitely be the next thing to try. Doing it after the family go to bed (or before they get up if they are teenage or older!) is probably the way to go. Turn off the Naim streamers etc too. After your router has fully restarted then restart the Naim streamers and any server/NAS as well. Then restart your IOS device and hopefully your patience will be rewarded.
best
David

thanks for clearing my confusion. clear as mud now :-) seems the new app is now the supported version for both the new core and also for NDS, so probably not a good idea in the long run to stay on 4.9 -- ho hum!
to be frank, i just want to enjoy my music without having to worry about such technical issues. Now, is that really too much to ask?

Indeed Ken, you need to move on a bit, although 4.9 was a good one. 5.0 has been a bit of a problem for some, but it was perfectly OK for me, as was its beta(s), but it seemed that it did not suit all set ups & it was not just the Naim model, I got the impression other attached equipment & network set up had an effect. During beta testing I've found it useful to uninstall the old app, restart the iPad & then re-install the new app, it overcame some issues for me anyhow. I've just done that when loading 5.1 & it worked straight away, instant room finding etc., & all that was needed is to recheck (tick) your settings
5.1 works fine-ish. The new navigation is irritating - re-routing the user to the home screen all the time via a "Reconnecting" message (I have Stay Connected ticked).
Just updated from 5.0 to 5.1 and no issues to report so far. Not that I had any significant issues with 5.0, other than tracking down the search function in Tidal. I do however recognise that 5.0 caused real problems for some.
I strongly recommend you follow Mike's tips above when updating to 5.1 to minimise the risk of any issues.
I do understand the commercial pressure to update the App to cater for the launch of the new Uniti range, but can't help thinking this was premature and us current users were caught in the middle of a buggy App. On the same note however, I would also commend Naim for being so responsive to the feedback on version 5.0 and getting a fix in the shape of 5.1 out so quickly - I would guess this too was a commercial imperative.
Let's hope 5.1 sorts things.
naim should publish two versions of the app. "naim" as the current stable version. And e.g. "naim NG" for the next/new/beta version to allow a public beta testing. After the NG version had become stable it will be released as "naim". Both apps should be installable side by side on one device. (IMHO)
Many thanks on getting the revision out post feedback and before the holiday downtime - impressive folks.
5.0 deleted and replaced with 5.1 I’ll do a system wide restart from router to the streamer later on. Hopefully that’ll cure the UPnP on / off status 5.0 seemed to have developed in my case.
Thank you for the quick response and update to the app
Sorted my phono icon issue and finds room straight away
Merry Christmas to all at Naim and on the forum
5.1 seems to have cured most of the issues I was experiencing: artwork now displays properly all the time; app doesn't return to home screen; server/rooms found without delay.
It hasn't resolved the display issue with singles though. When I select any of those, the artwork pretty much disappears off the top off the screen whilst Tidal shows other work by the selected artist.
I did flag this to Phil Harris yesterday but wonder if anyone else has the same issue? Clearly, it will only affect those of us with single tracks on our systems and Tidal accounts!
Cheers,
Ian

The update has given me two issues...
1 - it crashes more frequently
2. The app reconnects with the streamer / NAS which means not as fast and by returning doesn't always show album art.....
It's not nice to see that updates almost always cause issues, before things get back stable again....
Bert, Same issues for me:
My v4.9 in combination with Synology uPnP and 272 worked fine, but the v5 causes frequent freezes and crashes, followed by automatic, time-consuming reconnection.
Other issues:
2. Cover-art is displayed in low-resolution only
3. I have scrolling problems in my list of 30-40 playlists. When scrolling down, it often "jumps" back to the top of the list of playlists, Very annoying
4. For albums which only have 1 track, and the iPad in landscape position, the cover-art has a strange, too high upward position, resulting that only the bottom 3/4 of the picture is shown.... Some formatting problem
So, let us wait patiently (again) until this is all debugged ...
Tidal keeps reconnecting on IPad. If I move away from the app and try to go back, current album artwork playing list and searches all disapppear. It was fine before the update.

"2. Cover-art is displayed in low-resolution only" -the same issue in my case; poor quality of the album covers when displaying
Bert posted:Kacper posted:I'm not sure but I think sharpness of the album covers it used to be better right?
You are right: the new v5 displays all my album covers in LOW resolution. I'm sure they were HIGH resolution on V4.9.
Can Naim restore/enable high-res Cover Art please?
so it seems the new update (5.1) doesn't resolve the problem
Kacper,
Indeed, v5.1 shows the same low quality of Cover Art, so the problem not solved.
I just discovered something very odd: When streaming a song from my PC to my 272 (using JRiver MC, but probably with any uPnP program), the v5 and v5.1 app displays the album cover art in High Res.
HOWEVER, when selecting and playing the same song via the Naim app, the cover art is shown in Low Res!! The previous 4.x app versions showed all my album art in High Res.
What did Naim do?? Anybody having the same issue?
Kacper posted:"2. Cover-art is displayed in low-resolution only" -the same issue in my case; poor quality of the album covers when displaying
Hi Kacper, I found the fix for this is in my Synology during beta testing. I'm using 'Media Server' but I would expect the same solution can be found in 'Minimserver', wherever that might be. The new app has changed the iPad in DMA from a Generic device to a specific XBMC
Open Media Server>DMA Compatibility>Device List (button, new screen) ... On the iPad MAC Address-IP Address line, (the Device column shows XBMC) change the Profile from Default Profile to Default Profile With Original Cover. Then refresh & make sure its kept that setting, then save & close, thats it.
