N272 power supplies

currently trying a xps dr with my n272 and 300 dr, it is a improvement but not quite what I had hoped for. Would a 555dr be overkill for the n272?
In a word -no.
Only you can say whether it's worth twice what an XPS DR costs, but if the money isn't an issue for you, then it's probably worth trying. I haven't heard it myself, but from what others have reported about the effect of using a 555DR on pretty well anything, I would expect there would be a significant difference between the two power supplies on the 272.

Think I'll ask to give a 555dr a try, nothing to lose except alot of money if i like it!
I change my XPS-DR to a 555-DR on a 272/300 (non-DR) set up. TBH, the improvement was marginal.
Or you can try a pre-loved 555PS (non-DR). They come up for sale via reputable dealers - normally prices at around 50-60% of a new XPS.

I swear I wrote about this 2 months ago how ethier buy a 555PS or pocket your money because XPS doesnt do much
I had the same experience. I tried the XPS and it was meh, I can tell a bit of difference but it was marginal. Upgraded from a NAP-200 to NAP-250DR and the improvement was night and day. Going to listen to the XPS again now that i have upgraded amps, but so far the drawbacks of the extra box and extra expense to me outweighed it's marginal improvement in SQ. This was an XPS2, not a DR - so maybe the DR has a more significant impact as well.
Take care to install and "dress" the Burndy cable correctly to get the most from a power supply. It can make a big difference in sound quality. There is a thread in the FAQ.

In my experience there's not a night and day difference between XPS and 555 (both non dr). If XPS offer a small and not worthwhile change, I would not spend nearly double price on a 555, (or a second hand non dr for that sake) believing it will do it for you.

Charlie,
What do you mean by install and dress the Burndy cable correctly?

See Adam's post in the FAQ: https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...a-bit-about-burndies
For the best results (the results you are paying for) with a power supply that uses a Burndy cable, the cable should be unstressed such that the connectors fit their respective sockets easily and free of torsional strain; the cable should hang freely without touching the rack, wall, floor or other cables.
Also, it is common for the sound of a device powered by an XPS or 555PS to continue to improve in quality after hook-up and power-on especialy the first few days or more. So take care in setup and be wary of first impressions.

ps: sorry for taking so long to answer. This is a busy time, and my time zone is UT-8.
Thanks.
