how to update firware
Posted by: tonycurran1 on 19 December 2016
hi how do you update the firmware on naim dac i have the update on a usb stick many thanks.
Tony, when you opened up the zipped files that you downloaded from the Naim website, there was also a pdf file with the full instructions for the update. You need this to decode the button flashes which tell you what Fw you have currently and to show that the update was successful.
Thanks Richard![]()
Best check what version you are currently on too to ensure you need to update anyway
When was the last firmware update? I have an old NaimDac, haven't updated firmware for years.

I strongly suggest you to review your version. The software has been transforming the device to a new level, you don't want to miss out on that improvement....

Thanks Bert, will do.
Found this page:

I assume is this one I should use: "DAC, Software Firmware update, version 4.11.8, Dec 15" -- don't think I have a DAC-V1.
Will dig out the old manual to see if I can make it prompt/tell its current fw version.
Have not updated my n dac ,i wonder how many did not update . Was confused by which usb stick to use as it was said not everyone was suitable.Would be a good idea if there was a short video to show the process being done .I know some people think its a simple process but the fear of messing up is holding me back from doing the update .
.
Keith, download the files and print out and have a read through the illustrated pdf document. It's not so scary if you do that first.
I will do the update later tonight, if everything goes ok it could boost your confidence Keith :-)
BTW: I ran the version check, it said 4.11.6 which seems likely (never updated, purchased 2012), latest version is 4.11.8 (2015-Dec), and I'm quite looking forward to the upgrade!
or its an excellent thing for a dealer to do while you enjoy a fine cup of bean to cup coffee and stroke some 555PS's...
I did download the firmware but not being a computer man i do not own any memory sticks ,what do i ask for when purchasing one ,ie memory , make of stick etc.
I would suggest you use a memory stick from a reliable manufacturer such as Sandisk or similar. Go for one that is of modest capacity - 4 or 8GB is just about the smallest available these days. Ensure you properly format the stick before use. Test it by loading an album in WAV format (even the earliest Fw can recognise WAV via the USB) and seeing whether the DAC recognises it. If so, then re-format and load the stick with the required files for the update.
Yes I can confirm that about USB sticks, the NDac is very choosy about which it likes so make sure you can play a WAV file from the stick before attempting the update procedure. I've done a few at my local Hi FI store for people and I always use a NAIM memory stick.

Just reporting back, having done the DAC firmware upgrade, it was easy, and it sounds great!
My upgrade was fromVersion -> toVersion:
4.10.6 (dated 2012)
4.11.8 (dated 2015)
For Keith, who confesses to "not being a computer man", we can do our best to assist in his upgrade.
First step (which requires neither computer-skills nor memory-sticks) is to check the current firmware version of your DAC.
This is done by shutting off your DAC, and grabbing pen+pencil.
Then press the "Dock" button and power up the DAC (the "Dock" button can then be released) and take note of the buttons being displayed:
- A: some buttons will light up
- B: pause
- C: some buttons will light up
- D: pause
- E: some buttons will light up
This 3-step light sequence will tell us what firmware version you're running, and *IF* an upgrade is necessary.
Hi I have put memory stick in my dac how do i start the update?

That's quite well described in the pdf file which is included in the zip file.
I must say that the line 'The light combinations are a binary representation of the firmware versions. Use the following table to decode the three firmware versions:' sounds very Radio London in the second world war.
Tony:
Have you (re-)started the DAC with "Dock" pressed to check your current version to see if an upgrade is even necessary?
Before adding any upgrade files to your memory-stick, just add a .wav or .flac file and plug it in to the DAC -- it should start playing the file.
The typo in the title of this thread reminds me of a cartoon I saw decades ago in (I think) Punch. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are sitting in front of the Christmas tree and she turns to him and says, "Actually, I said that we wanted a fur."
Season's greetings to all!
