Naim 250

Posted by: craig's on 20 December 2016

Having just bought a Naim 250 and streaming device, every review and every post says the amp is great, but... it's running B&W CM10s, and sounds amazing on some jazz records, and singer-songwriter type records, but when it comes to any great rock record, it doesn't handle it at all. I have had the amp swapped, but sounds no better. Classic records like Marquee Moon, Exile on Main St, most stuff by R.E.M., Teenage Fanclub, Pixies - all sound truly terrible. The bass booms, the vocal is murky, everything is lost in a big ugly soup of a mix. Great records I have loved my whole life are suddenly rubbish.

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong? Right now this Naim is the worst amp I have ever heard. Previously I owned a Quad.

Good evening Craig.  Is this a pre DR 250 which did have a reputation for being a bit shall we say murky.

Lindsay, I would love to know where that rumoured reputation came from. My non DR 250 is the clearest, most dynamic and transparent  NAP I've heard short of a 300 or 500. Not a DR, no, but 'murky'? Only with one's foot in one's ear

Okay guys - murky entirely wrong word. I just found the old 250 a little ponderous and after home demo went back to the 200.

Hardly the basis for a 'reputation' - more an opinion..

Okay Adam fair point although I think you'd agree that the virtues of the previous 250 were debated over time on here. But absolutely the OPs problems are something different entirely.

Lindsay

The OP is conspicuous by their absence, first and last post?

Posted on: 22 December 2016 by ken c

there is also the possibility that the OP may actually have no experience of the 250 at all -- and that this may have been a way to generate some traffic on the thread. There have been numerous examples of this type in the past.

i say "possibility" -- as of course this might also have been a genuine posting and i apologize for implying some kind of mischief here... But the lack of follow-up is somewhat suspicious....

But didn't listen to it ?

...or ride it? :-)

HiFi is a very subjective thing - a system one person loves another will hate, music that one person loves another will hate. One persons "classy" is another persons "gaudy", one persons "discrete and understated" is another persons "dull and boring" ... If Craig considers the NAP250 to be the worst amp he's ever heard then he's entitled to his opinion ...

...even if it's wrong.

No - seriously - if he doesn't like it then that's his opinion but at least lets try to identify if there's something that is causing the amp to perform poorly or is it just that it doesn't suit him. Hopefully he actually demo'd the amp before buying it but it wouldn't be the first time that someone has bought something just because they were told it was 'the mutts' and then found they didn't like it.

In answer to your last question - in terms of VFM the 250 is arguably the BEST amp Naim ever produced IMHO

Which one of the 250's do you refer to ?

To my knowledge there's at least four or five versions of Nap 250, bolt down beeing the first one, DR beeing the latest

Exactly right Loki. I also had a 250 non DR. And it was just as you describe. Where does this nonsense come from?

Not nonsense imo

I preferred recent serviced olive or CB 250's vs 250.2

135's maybe closer pricewise to 250.2 still better to my ears.

Can't comment on the DR but guess there's a reason 250.2 prices are very low while olive/CB keep constant

I'm stuck in bed with flu, headache and all. I have nothing much to do so a number of interesting questions arise in my mind: did he buy a NAP250 without listening to it? What his streaming device is? A Squeezebox Classic? The SQB Classic has a sort of volume control and two line outputs, so why not connect it to a NAP250? Why has he registered four days ago, done just one post and disappeared? But the most intriguing is: what can the surname be, of a guy called Craig's – Liszt?

Okay guys - I've said above murky was the wrong word.

Same here. I didn't like the 250.2. To me it sounded heavy and maybe a bit murky. I would never have bought one.

To say it's the worst amp is pushing it a bit far though, some people obviously love it.

Posted on: 22 December 2016 by The Strat (Fender)

It was no doubt a great amp - one very reputable Naim dealer said that with the right speaker it absolutely shone others less so - but I was never persuaded to trade my NAP 200 for it.  But once I heard a DR version.

Posted on: 22 December 2016 by Massimo Bertola

I, for one. Have bought a NAP250 because it's powerful and Naim is making it since 41 years. To me it was enough. And I like it.

Just joined us, posted just the once, not got back to answer any questions, I would say its more than somewhat suspicious!

Posted on: 22 December 2016 by Slim68

Interesting that there has been no response from the OP. Was someone just putting the cat amongst the pigeons?

Posted on: 22 December 2016 by Innocent Bystander

Maybe he's used to some other forum where it might be rare to get responses in less than several days, so might not have thought of looking yet (though if it was my first post as a new member I'd have been checking at least daily)

But is was indeed a rather strange post, and certainly so lacking in information that a meaningful answer couldn't be more than guesswork.
