Super Lumina speaker cable Vs NAC A5
Posted by: Paristhea on 20 December 2016
A friend offered to sell me his used Super Lumina speaker cable for half the price he paid when he bought it new. My system is N272 with 250DR and ProAc D20R speakers with a NAC A5 speaker cable. I can not hear the SL before i buy it as he is far away.
Will it make a significant difference to the sound of my system, or is the benefit of the SL more evident on higher end systems (300 or 500 for example)?
You need to listen to it before buying. So far, i preferred naca5 over SL. System, room and ears differ. Why does he want to sell?
I agree. You really need to listen. I wasn't keen on SL cables either, but there are plenty out there who love them. What cable is your friend changing to?
As this is a friend, why not arrange to buy the SLs with the caveat you can return them if you don't find VFM in your system? I guess you'd be responsible for the shipping to and fro if you don't value them, but that's a relatively small cost in the grand scheme and you'd have your answer.
I've never heard SL speaker cable, but at half price it's an opportunity I'd jump on. Then again, you haven't told us how long the cable runs are.
At half the price - good deal. As I wrote in my email - it will make your system more transparent. If you like that change - that's another thing
If you don't like it I will buy it off you ![]()
Your in a win win situation, if you decide you don't like them, you can re sell them , and you will easily get your money back and possibly even make a profit.
I've had a set of SL on dem and decided they are not for me, but I didn't have the full loom which may well be needed in order to really make them sing.
I have never seen a set of SL at half price, so this might well be your window of opportunity ..
They do make a difference whether you like them or not is a different matter in my system combined with an SL interconnect they really came into their own.
I can't see a XPS power supply for the 272 in your profile this could be more of an upgrade than the speaker cables certainly worth a listen?
I would go for it.They will be nicely run in and I am sure you could sell them on not losing any money if you aren't bowled over.
I have heard them in Naim Systems and thought they where impressive if a little bit pricey. But compared to some other cable companies like Nordost and Audio Note not to outrageously priced.
I'd agree that adding an XPS would be a better option, but at half price, there's nothing to lose by trying the SL cables.
Agree - at half price I'd be interested if I didn't already have them!
I prefer SL presentation - in my system they bring tighter focus and better bass control.
Even if you don't like what you hear you should be able to sell them on without loss as your probably find someone keen to take them off your hands.
I would go for it.
I switched from Naca5 to SL and it was a major improvement, however if you don't like it you can always easily resell it pretty easily at that price.
Thanks all for the replies.
I agree that worst case scenario I can resell it an no loss.
So subject is closed, I am getting it.
Will be back for first impressions.
Merry Xmas all

Good decision, hopefully you will have them in time for Xmas
I upgraded to SL, first with an interconnect between the NDac and the Supernait 2 - which even in my modest (by Forum standards) Naim system, this made a tremendous improvement. Adding SL speaker cable completed it. I listen to classical music and both upgrades were worthwhile - the interconnect seemed to make the most difference.

Now Chris... to complete your very modest system you need a 555PS on your nDAC. My personal preference is for a non-DR version, with a regular power lead on the nDAC and a PowerLine on the 555PS. Some pre-loved ones can be found if one looks long enough.
