New year Hi Fi resolutions

Posted by: wenger2015 on 29 December 2016

New year resolutions tend to be with reference to curbing ones excesss'...

But I have decided, to NOT Curb my upgrade spending habits in the new year.

So my new year resolution is to  purchase  two new racks and possibly upgrade my speaker cables....

So what might be your new year hifi resolutions?

Max,

speaking of concerts and New Year resolutions... A couple of years ago I made the resolution to go to many more concerts.  No matter how great the system, the first few seconds sat in front of a live orchestra are enough to convince that no hifi can match such an experience.  So that is what I have done, and on average I attend some kind of concert at least once or twice every month, sometimes up to twice in a week. Judging from a certain thread in the Music Room it would appear I'm not alone in this.  Quite apart from being really enjoyable, it gives me a good perspective on the whole hifi thing, and all for a total cost of the "next step" box.

As for the n-Sats, surely Steven Stills has it right:  Love the one you're with.

Happy New Year everybody.

To replace my ancient  Ittock 11 with a ex demo Ekos SE .

PS Happy New Year to all on the forum... Graham

Ok - it's still in a planning phase, but... possibly new speakers for the living room. And if winds blow from favourite directions a new pre-power to replace my SN2...

Music wise - enter a recording studio sometime in the spring to record a new album. Start gigging in some local clubs before that.

Music wise, learn to play the Norman Watt Roy bassline from "hit me with your rhythm stick" properly.

Hifi wise - DR the 500 and think about TT upgrades.

I am resolved to spend less on hifi this year as I intend buying a motorbike and can't really afford to spend on both.  So a couple of power lines will be about all.  I already have a shed load of gigs booked for next year and I'm very happy with my current system so a year's chill won't hurt at all

Now that does sound like a good idea, possibly add a few more hifi shows into the mix aswell...

Sounds like the Harley is on order then...

I used to book the entire classical season at my local concert halls but after a while found I kept forgetting some of the concerts to the point of wiping out the 30% discount for booking the lot.

Nowadays my wife is working stupid hours and commuting an hour each way so we'd rarely get the chance to make the start of any together. They never seem to be on weekends.

For now my challenge is to write some new bass lines for new tracks we've written - my favourite is always when we come up with something along the lines of 6/4 to 5/4 to 4/4

I also hope to play again with my friends from Athens next year - some studio time and perhaps a gig or two...

My Hi-Fi New Year resolutions are fairly loose, with nothing set in stone. When I get around to listening to the new Unity range it my change everything anyway. But for now, my thoughts revolve around the following…

... A NAP of some description to expand my UQ2's capabilities - and as a potential stepping stone to the more transparent / revealing Pre-Streamers.

... New speakers if I can find anything that works next to a rear wall.

... New speaker cable to replace my ancient NACA4.

... Explore more HD music.

And that's it. 2016 was a big step for me, not so much financially or adding a huge number of electronic boxes, but more so the time, effort and commitment to finally explore the process of ripping CD's (properly) outside of iTunes, setting up a Mac mini as a server and then deciding on my first streaming unit to test the waters. The Unitiqute2 has fitted in so well that I'm now rather attached to the little beast, despite the potentially seductive charms of the Atom and above.

My resolution is to listsn more and read audio forums less.  Oh..  and if I can scrape together the funds a pair of floorstanding speakers, but that might not be until 2018.

Richard,

I don't go to concerts as often as I would (and should): sometimes I leave the Conservatorio knowing that the very same night, in our auditorium, there's something interesting; and yet the long teaching day and the idea of having to take the Metro and a train around Midnight somehow discourage me...

But sometimes I do. The entrance to my classrooms is the same as the one to the stage, and I occasionally cross paths with interesting people in the open air corridor leading to it. Once I was going back to work after a coffee pause, and in the passage I met Stevie Winwood. He was playing there that same night, so I stayed. We exchanged a few words, and I thought, somehow amusingly, at what I'd have thought in 1969 when I listened to Blind Faith's LP if they had told me of such a circumstance in the distant future.. Another time I saw this low, large, eerie looking woman with a huge head of grey hair, looking a little like Mad Madam Mim, who entered the stage door, sat at the piano and started playing like a wonderful fury - Martha Argerich. Another time they told me that courses were suspended because of some event in the main auditorium, I went down and there was Alfred Brendel playing and meeting the students....

Life and work in a musical environment is priceless. Concerts are unique occasions because they also make very fine memories. I sometimes resent the little, mean people and events that can spoil the pleasure of even a privileged job like mine, but then when I walk into our main hall, and think of the giants of music that have stepped onto that stage, I can't but feel proud, and very lucky. Concerts are wonderful.

Best wishes to you too,

M.

  • Resist the temptation to get a 252 (any any other upgrade for that matter).
  • Buy plenty of music (and find the time to listen to it)

Resistance to temptation is just wasting energy needlessly.... It's best to just give in gracefully...

Once again, nicely summarised

Good luck with your plans, Wenger. I'll forward to your reports.

As for me, given my upgrades over the past couple of years, I have no plans for any more during 2017 and instead my resolution is to find more time to simply enjoy listening to music.

Might tweak the home theatre system though.

Really going for it next year. All being well an S1 to replace my 552dr.

Happy new year to you all.

For me, I will hopefully replace my S20s with a small version of Titan 808 if released and, possibly a new source if Naim make something appealing.

Finding more time to listen to music is a very good new year resolution , so goes without saying that's also on my list...

Fortunately I have a very accommodating dealer, that let's me have gear at extraordinary good prices, so I want to take full advantage in the new year before he goes out of business ......
