Ethernet Cables - Which is most important?

Posted by: Pauleb on 31 December 2016

Having followed recent discussion in regards to Ethernet cables with interest, I'm looking to improve my current mixture of Belkin Cat 6 and Chord C-Stream.

The question I have, which I've not been able to find amongst the various threads, is which cables have the most significant positive impact and ultimately where is resource best targeted?

My current set-up is as follows -

CISCO C2960 switch connecting

- Router
- Small Green Computers - sonicTransporter i7 (Roon Core)
- SONORE microRendu > Chord 2Qute > 272
- NAS
- iMac (running HQPlayer)

Thanks in advance for any views members may have?

In my simpler setup, the one that makes the most difference is the one between the switch and the streamer, followed by the one between the switch and the nas.

The cable between your network switch and the streamer is the most relevant one -

I just picked up a 'slightly used' Chord C-Stream...yet to try it to see if I can hear it vs. Cinnamon on the NDS. Even if I can't -- was a very reasonable price and will use it to replace the 99 cent patch cable going from my switch to my Qute2.

As other say, most difference between switch and streamer.

I refuse to post on another ethernet cable thread because they always seem to end in an almighty bun fight.

Damn.....

Yes, switch to streamer, then server/NAS (if used as a server) to switch.

I have now Nordost Heimdall 2 Ethernet cable  (between NDX and LAN socket in the wall) and it is significantly better, more details of bass, trebles, mids and bass is also more stiff. before I have used Audioqest Cinnamon

I was very sceptical when I ordered two Cinnamon ethernet cables.  Only the short cable arrived so I initially replaced the cheap ethernet cable between switch and the NAS with Cinnamon and couldn't hear a difference. I wondered if I had wasted my money. When the second cable arrived a week later and I installed it between the switch and the ND5XS I was very pleasantly surprised as to how it sounded. I sort of relate it to looking through my specs just after I've cleaned them. Crystal clear.

The buns are OK. It's the rock cakes that cause the problems.

That really depends on the velocity at the moment of impact of course. I have one or two bun-shaped dents in my head when I first started to bang on about Audioquest ethernet cables.

Any way, sicks and stones (or is that buns)…….

hi Paul, i'm wondering why you're using an iMac to run HQPlayer -- could that not be done through your sonicTransporter?

we have similar setups -- but i'm using a 282 instead of the 272.

BTW, i love Selfie Monkey too!

Hi Joe,

I run HQPlayer on my iMac as the sonicTransporter is sadly not compatible.

Nigel,

Duck?  Then orange sauce is heading your way (OK, cherry works just as well).
