Have I crocked my SBL tweeters?

Posted by: Tarquin Maynard-Portly on 03 January 2017

Or am I just being paranoid?

Cranked it up LOUD couple of nights ago, and it now sounds slightly "tizzy" on HF... Not massive buzzing, doesn't sound like a Kazoo but my SBLs dont sound as sweet as they did, IMO. ( IME?)

Aware it could be something vibrating with HF sound, but the obvious culprits have been looked at.

I know if I'd totally blown the tweeters I'd hear nothing, but even so...

HNY all, btw.

Good news Mike. I hope the new drivers restore your frizzy top end to normality.

Hi Tarquin,

Please let us know how this works out as I've got a pair of Allae's, one with a buggered tweeter, but I can't justify £200 on a tweeter at the moment, so I too have been looking st the D2008 85100. Would love to know how they sound!

Will do.

Much as I love Naim, paying >£200 for a tweeter available elsewhere for about £60 is asking too much IMO.

A friend has just replaced his tweeters for a fraction of the price quoted by a Hi-Fi dealer.

Oxford based company. Anyone interested can email me for further info.

I think that in addition to being matched, the tweeters that Naim supplies also has a small block of some damping material (?sorbothane??) affixed to the rear plate. ISTR that I paid $320 for a bona fide Naim supplied pair, and at some later point $58 per pair from the distributor at OEM pricing through someone I knew in the industry.

Current Naim price is IRO £210 each. I've just taken delivery of two, sequentially numbered, delivered for £106. The vendor included the following note:

Come on Salisbury, £200 is taking the proverbial.

Don't SBL tweeters have a weight or something attached to the back (i.e. similar to what Ron said, but a bit more substantial)?

Might be an idea to have a good look and swap them to the new ones if they do.

With speakers matching should be impedance and frequency response - I don't know how much variation there is between production line models, even adjacent on the line, nor do I know to what tolerance Naim matches them, but that involves work (=time =money). As for tolerances of other components in the system, any speaker manufacturer worth its salt will be testing selecting crossover components etc, even capacitors, to a tight tolerance, probably 2% or better, likewise any in amp circuitry that where the value has a direct bearing on sound quality. How much difference any individual may notice is impossible to guess, but Naim will only want to supply fully in spce.

And I doubt any of us expect Naim to be bargain basement budget prices, even for components they source elsewhere.

Tarquin and J.N, are you brothers?
