Urgent help needed - severe NAS and app problem

Posted by: Osteoclast on 03 January 2017

Dear all again!

Recently had troubles with album art and meta data, which did not appear in the Naim app. Got a excellent suggestion to reinstall all the files from the MyBook NAS. Managed to rebuild the file directory from the MyTwonky-interface. The whole thing looked lovely for a second and I was able to play the CD.s, with album art and all metadata. The Cd.s were better organised but the fonts had changed somewhat (to the better) on the app. Now there seems to be two different copies on the app. One with the new appearance and all metadata and the other looking much the same as the old without all metadata and album art. Suddenly, all has turned even worse and I cannot reach the NAS via the app. Cant find the NAS on my LAN despite several attempts with different IP-addresses , both static and dynamic. Does anyone have a clue what I should do now?

Sincerely, Thomas

This is not an immediate fix, but I suggest you get rid of the mybook. It's a piece of junk, and Twonky is dreadful. Get a Synology with Minimserver or a Qnap with Asset or Minim. Once you have a proper nas you can get a rock solid setup established.

Its the same as I 'hinted' to you on the other thread.      So as HH has been less than 'hinting'   I agree MyBook is junk & Twonky is extremely tWonkey.

Firstly, you need to log into your router's website in your web browser. I use a BT HH5 router and the default IP address for the router is usually something like 192.168.1.254 or something similar. Once there, you need to check all the  devices connected to your network to find your MyBook NAS. Once you have this (by process of elimination of other devices IP adresses if necessary) open a new tab in your browser and type in the WD MyBook's IP address to open it's GUI.

If you get this far you need to go to Settings/Media and ensure that Twonky Service is enabled. Click on the ">" next to Twonky Service which will open a drop down list of media devices on your network.

Check to see that the IP address of your Uniti is on this list and that the "Block" box alongside it is not checked.

Hi Thomas, having survived 2+ years with a very basic NAS (and having similarly received advice from Mike-B and others when having problems about getting a decent one - which I have - )  I can only sympathize...

1. Do you have a back up of your NAS on e.g. a USB drive? Assuming yes, the worst case scenario is you need a decent NAS but at least you have your music files intact.

2. Does the NAS appear "on"? If yes and you have set it up on dynamic IP then as described by SJBabbey you can identify the IP and try to log on to the NAS from the browser. There is also a handy free app for iOS which identifies all devices connected to your network Which also allows to ping the device to test connectivity (Net Analyzer Lite I think).

3. I don't know your NAS but on Windows I use WinCp to log on to the NAS (once you have the right IP of course) and check the file structure and the Twonky configuration. If it's a Linux one I have some idea where to look for the Twonky files but I suspect it's not a Twonky issue what you are facing but a network one.
