Naim App - Volume control

Posted by: Skyhigh on 06 January 2017

Hi All,

Suggestion for improvement of the Naim app. I'd love to see a numeric volume displayed in the app to mimic the readout on the Uniti/MuSo devices.

Thanks

I fully agree and perhaps to make it rotary rather than linear in operation.

Big thumbs up!

I agree about the linear thing. I find it a bit tricky, especially on smaller devices (I mostly use iPhone 6). Having moved to an NDX, I actually find the +/- controls easier.

Remember there are two types of volume controls controlled by the Naim app -- digital, and analogue.  We know that for the analogue ones (via System Automation, which is what my NDS does with my Supernait2) that such is impossible, as the analogue volume control does not provide feedback to the app.  Perhaps possible with the digital controls (??).

I believe that the analogue volume controls are only controlled by the + and - buttons in the app, whereas the digital volume control gets the slider.  No exceptions.

+1 for the volume value displayed in the app. Otherwise I always have to look at my uniti to see which volume level I have reached.

and also +1 for the +/- keys instead of a slider. The slider is somewhat fishy to use.

Because of these two reasons I only use my normal uniti remote to control the volume.

I believe Naim have cited technical reasons why the numerical volume can't be shown on the app, although some other streamer manufacturers do it. Of course it's a non-starter for those of us with separate preamps, I guess we should just be grateful for system automation! Maybe one day, for the all-in-one devices, though?

When music is playing I'd like to see the basic controls for the Naim app in the lock screen on my iPhone or iPad.. Sonos do this and also most other music apps such Apple Music and Spotify.

When music's playing I'd like someone to bring me regular cups of tea but hey, one can't have it all.

James, you are not the first person to request this, but the response from Naim was that there are reasons why it can't be done, I forget the exact details, but something to do with having to jump through hoops to satisfy Apple, I think. I wonder if the new Unitis might be able to do this, as they do now have Apple Airplay. Or should I say, will have....

Thanks Chris. I think the likes of Sonos took a while to implement as well (only very recently).  I'm sure there's plenty you've got to do to have bits of your app working at the pre-password stage of the phone.

But we can ask.

Surely that's an option for statement owners, anything else would be a travesty!

Foot massages should also be on the options list....

Lack of a decent volume control is one of may reasons or preferring Bubble to the very average indeed Naim effort

JSH - Bubble? Do tell...I know not of Bubble.

DrMark

Bubble?  Look in Google Play Store and you will find it sitting there.  Type in UPNP and it's the top one.  I also like UPnPlay too, which has a slightly different approach but is also good.

I don't generally have Apple things so I don't know if there's a version for that, but I'd imagine that a UPNP search would throw up some better offerings than the Naim

Bubble UPnP is only available for android. Unfortunately naim does not use the standard way for in track navigation, so you cannot seek inside a track using other apps than the naim app.

If naim also would support the open home standard I really would be happy. With this you could manage the playlist inside the streamer what would make playback with other upnp apps more robust.

Supporting such standards is more important than supporting MQA IMHO.

Yet another reason not to become an Applista then!!

Seriously though, I'd have thought a scout round the Apple "Store" for UPNPs would throw up something useful.  Isn't there one called Plugplay or similar which is said to be good?

I only use the Naim for radio which it is good at, but the volume control is a bugbear even in that especially if you have big fingers and use a phone as a controller.

Come on Naim, it can't be that difficult

Related big fingers issue - I find it difficult to accurately use the A-Z function on an iPhone .

Yes, the Naim slider reminds me of trying to turn a rotary amp control in wicket-keeping gloves (Yes, I did that once and woke up the baby; don't ask!!)
