SU and Netflix
Posted by: Crofta on 07 January 2017
I tried to connect SU to my TV via Digital 3 (optical) input to listen Netflix on my stereo system. Netflix sound settings default stereo, by Panasonic technical support my TV do not modify audio signal in any way. But only continuous noisy rattle is the result. Would anybody advice what might be the problem, please ?
Are you getting lots of clicking and what connection are you using?
Sorry just noticed optical. I have a Panasonic TV have the same problem and I don't believe there is a fix. As far as I understand it the Netflix app outputs in 5.1 or suchlike and the SU can't process this. No amount of messing changes this. As far as I could work out the fault is with Netflix. I used to have the same problem with Amazon TV but a recent firmware Update fixed it. Let me you know if you resolve it as I have been told there is no solution until Netflix fix the problem.

No Sam, Netflix sound output is adjustable, stereo or 5.1, so stereo default would work ........
If you are using the Panasonic TV apps then I believe the option is available but is faulty on the Netflix app. Do other apps work?

I watch Netflix on my Samsung, using the built-in app on the TV.
The sound is connected to my SuperUniti via optical.
I simply set the TV audio output to "Stereo" and it works fine.

This is what I do -- optical out from my Samsung TV to my Qute2. It doesn't matter what the input is. On the Samsung setup menu, Audio>SPDIF Output is set to PCM. Seems to work fine!
It's the same on Vieras.
MENU button on remote > Sound > SPDIF selection > set to PCM.
It may well be the case but this problem is specific to Panasonic and Netflix and is obviously not going to be the case on a Samsung TV. Everything bar Netflix works and I have been in touch with Panasonic who blame Netflix and vice versa. No amount of settings change will get Netflix to work. Crofta did you get it to work in the end?
In another forum it was advised to try the following:
1. Open Netflix and the desired show on Netflix
2. Pause the show and go to the VIERA sound settings
3. Scroll down to SPDIF Selection
4. Switch from AUTO to PCM (if already PCM, toggle between AUTO and PCM)
Thank you everyone for replies, switch from auto to pcm was needed )) it was on TV sound menu second page, which I didn't open before )) Now it works ))
One more think, sound output on my TV works or not regardless what is shown in TV menu, so if sound does not work it is just needed to switch different option
so to avoid such inconvinience I use TV headphone sound output, sound quality is identical to SPDIF output in my system
Then why not use the analogue stereo RCA output? The problem with the headphone out is that it is both variable level and the level is not line level.
I have some recent experience with this. My setup was a Unitilite and a high end recent model 65 inch Panasonic 4K tv (not sure the make / model as I'm not at home currently). I had an optical cable running directly from my TV optical out into my Unitilite.
My findings were as follows:
Although Netflix does theoretically offer the option of 5.1 or "stereo", stereo is not available on many programs (especially the recent release Netflix exclusives ("The OA" springs to mind as an example). And in many cases where 2.0 is offered, even when selected, Netflix still sends the 5.1 signal, which as previously stated require de-coding that Naim products aren't built to provide. AND... it's a major pain in the ass to have to select between 5.1 and 2.0 every time you want to watch something on Netflix.
My Panasonic TV, although capable of doing the decoding, will not send a PCM signal through optical. ONLY when using an HDMI ARC input/output are you able to drill down far enough into the TV's audio settings to specify that you want it to send a PCM signal. Given that the older range Uniti products don't offer HDMI Arc... this wasn't an option either in terms of feeding my Uniitlite a useable signal.
So.... in the end I just caved and bought a Cambridge CXU bluray player (they are currently being offered with about a 40% manufacturers discount through end of Jan I believe)... so I use the CXU to process the audio from the TV and feed that audio signal to my Unitilite. It seems a bit of overkill... but everything now works perfectly and I have all the functionality I need and the ability to play Bluray or just about any other kind of disk you can think of.

Thanks for the info. Same situation for me as above, maybe it's the newer TVs that have this problem. All other apps seem OK just Netflix that causes a problem. Maybe the new uniti range will fair better.
