HDD v SSHD v SDD

Posted by: Mike-B on 08 January 2017

I'm about to help a buddy move from UnitiServe to all NAS.  He has asked about HDD v SSD & SSHD.  I'm not talking money, I know cost per TB & what each sector is;     the question is reliability, access speed, noise etc...  I've read all the www stuff,  my question is aimed at experienced users & IT people.    I'm getting close to need to start thinking about some more space for myself, so any help will be twice appreciated.

As far as SSD goes, of the three I have owned two have failed. That's not a very good batting average. My X1 is blindingly fast to start up and shut down (SSD) and this cannot be argued with. I've just built a new PC and used conventional HDDs because they are in my experience more reliable. I did cogitate about installing a SSD boot disk but I'm not convinced. And they still cost a lot.

Hope this doesn't breach forum rules.

There is an interesting thread on Computer Audiophile that may be relevant to this:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/82963...-all-at-least-for-me

The OP is using a Startech USB extender powered by LPSUs. He contends this gives galvanic isolation PLUS using USB sticks aids SQ; a continuation of the USB > nDAC debate perhaps. The thread then goes on to look at types of USB/RAM, such as SSD.

I have bought the StarTech and will repeat his experiment, buying a terrabyte of USB sticks and attaching the StarTech to my NAS. I will then set up a script to copy my music files to the StarTech.

Hope you find it interesting.

Mike how much storage are you looking to put in the nas?  I'm still with WD Red hdd's in both of my nas's.  The cost/benefit ratio is not in my favor for use merely as a music server for one, and to back up for the other.

(My qnap is 2 x 3TB WDD Red as JBOD; this is my primary server.  My Synology is 2 x 4tb WDD as 'Synology Raid.')

My 2012 Macbook Pro is ssd, and in a laptop I certainly appreciate the speedy boot that an ssd brings.  In my home music server...hdd's have seemed fine and the way to stay for the time being.

I had to change three out of four HDD in my Thecus N4800 NAS within the first 18 months of owning it, but for the last four/five years everything has worked fine - maybe something to do with heat/shocks during shipping?

My buddy only needs 2TB maybe 3TB would be better thinking in the future.  He's fed up with the US & is done with it & wants to go NAS only.   I need to extract the albums from the US in FLAC & then its up to him if he keeps them in FLAC or I convert them back to normally tagged WAV.  He was all ready to go WD Red's yesterday,  then he raised this new question on what about SSDH & SSD.

I'm OK for about another year with my 2x2TB, but sooner or later it's gonna need to grow one or two TB's,  so I'm interested for myself at some time.
