Please check Naim app 5.1 slide-over hanging

Posted by: noname on 09 January 2017

I reported an issue to Naim support just before Christmas:

This is a note to let you know, if not already aware, that there is still a problem using slide-over under iOS 10.2 with the iPad Pro 9.7in model I am using. After deleting the app and doing a fresh install to re-initialise, the app appears on the scrolling list of apps available for slide-over. When selected, find rooms shows the available rooms but when one of these is selected it hangs trying to reconnect. Eventually the Naim app and the main app both crash. If I manage to pull-down in the Naim app only a partial list of other available apps appear and none of them can be selected.

After a reminder today, Phil says that they have not been able to reproduce the problem and no one else has reported it. Every time I try this the Naim app hangs trying to reconnect when used as a slide-over app. I can slide it back and out again but that usually leads to a crash. Mine is a 128Gb model. Do not have any problem with any other app I have tried.

if you have access to a similar model can you please try using the Naim app from the slide-over list, if you have not already done so, and report back what happens.

Many thanks

Roger Henry

I had the problem you listed above last month, but now its working fine.

Only issue now is that in landscape mode, when 2 apps are open. Naim app does not show the volume properly. The mute icon also overlaps over the Multiroom icon.

Have to again say how much i like the split view. Thanks Naim!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the reply. Do you know of any relevant changes between it not working and now working? Can you tell us which model of iPad you are using?

I cannot get as far as split view (where both apps are active) as the Naim app always hangs in slide-over.

Update. It had never occurred to me to try slide-over on the iPad in portrait mode but it seems to be the case that the Naim app is happy (or should I say happier) in portrait mode in that it does not hang. I am usually reading mail or browsing in Safari when I need to use the Naim app for a moment and that is naturally done in landscape - as on a laptop.

I have the ipad pro 9.7 and I was in an email chat with Phil Harris of Naim a few months ago. I requested Naim implement split view and Phil replied that it was being worked on but only for the big 12.9 Ipad. I asked him to let us 9.7 ipad users have the same functionality.

I think the only change I did recently was to switch off and restart my ipad. I wrote about my experiences in the Naim app v5 thread.

So now for me it works in both portrait and landscape view apart from the small issue i listed above.

Just to encourage others to try this please and feedback your findings:

You can use Slide Over with iPad Pro, iPad Air and later, and iPad mini 2 and later.

A good explanation of how to use it is http://www.imore.com/ipad-multitasking#slide

Please try it out on a supported iPad when using another app in portrait mode and also in landscape mode.

Thanks!

iPad Pro, iOS 10.2

Portrait mode - works as advertised, app reconnects quickly.

Landscape mode - app hangs - 'reconnecting', circle indicator does not rotate.

Many thanks for the confirmation Richard. I will by following up with Phil Harris but it would be really helpful if all forum members using the Naim app on an iPad that supports slide-over could also try this, as described in the previous posts in this topic, and report your own findings.

Spoke to soon, tonight I'm having the same issue in Landscape view as the other posters.

iPad Air: Landscape hangs reconnecting; portrait seems to work ok.

Many thanks to those who have responded so far.

I can now also add that I have also been able to test independently on an iPad Mini 4 to find exactly the same results: slide-over works in portrait mode but hangs when trying to reconnect in landscape mode.

Following up again with Naim support. In the mean time others please also try this themselves and report their findings here.

Tried with an iPad Pro.  As with others it works fine with in portrait but it hangs in landscape.  Running iOS 10.2 D

Thanks Dave and others. Naim have now confirmed that the developers are taking a look at this.

Same for me. Definitely used to work both ways when 5.0 came out but now only works in portrait. Pretty sure it worked when I first had 5.1 as well.

Just to add. In landscape I can have the Naim app as the main app and then bring in something like Safari from the right. If I drag the screen so it's 50:50 split both apps are fairly usable.

Thanks James, and yes - the problem seems only to arise when sliding the Naim app over.

Giving these posts a like for those taking the time to check and report.

Sad to say that from my testing Naim App 5.3 has not fixed the slide-over hang and crash in portrait mode which had been confirmed by every user that took time to try it and report here

Can you try Landscape. First open Naim so it is the main screen and then slide over another app (Safari).  So then you have 2 windows with Naim on the left side.

For me then Landscape works, but not if I switch the order round.

Oops sorry. I should have said Landscape mode of course. Portrait mode was not the problem.

Yes, I got Portrait and Landscape mixed up when I posted what was late last night for me. Corrected above. Sorry.

From my first post under this topic, the problem has always been when trying to slide the Naim app over another app. Not fixed in 5.3. Thanks for confirming.

How can I get the Naim app in the list of slide out options?

If you are running the app on a supported device it should be in the list automatically.

Sorted it , thanks, Roger. The app was only v4.9 - I was sure it had been updated. Did actually update it, and of course the v5.3 does allow the slide out.

I did notice, however, that when the Naim app is the 'slide out app', the little thing to pull down from the top to change to a different app didn't seem to be there. I didn't have chance to check this in detail though.

Had confirmation now from Naim (thanks Phil) that the landscape mode slide-over issue is still on the to-do list is not fixed in 5.4
